I started this series with this book and I wasn't too lost so you can read this as a standalone but I do wish I had started with book one since you have couples from the previous books. Despite not starting at book one, I still enjoyed this story. I wasn't too sure how I felt about this couple at first, probably do to lack of info I would have gotten in previous books, however, the more I read the more I liked Xander and Emma.
Xander is one of the program soldiers who was raised by a program soldier. Due to his fathers over controlling hand, Xander was more machine than human to others. What they didn't know was that his fathers hold on him was so strong, he knew no other way in life.
Emma was held captive by a geneticist who is trying to build their own program soldiers for terrorist. Xander was on of the soldiers who rescued her. Part of the information I'm missing is that somehow these soldiers have a way of "matching" with a female to produce future soldiers and Emma is Xander's match. The only problem is Xander doesn't want kids because he knows how his father will take over their lives and he doesn't want that for them. Being Xander's match, Emma feels the strong connection and is determined to break down his walls and accept her.
Being a fan of strong Alpha's I never thought I would enjoy a story where the heroine has to lead the Hero because of his lack of basic human relationships. Surprisingly, this is what ultimately made me love Xander and Emma's story. It was also a nice change to read about a man who played no games and just said what he meant which meant Emma could do the same. I look forward to reading more from this author.
