Dixie Moon, Book Four, Redemption Mountain Historical Western Romance Series
“The author has a talent for bringing the historical west to life, realistically and vividly, and doesn’t shy away from some of the harder aspects of frontier life, even though it’s fiction. Recommended to readers who like sweeping western historical romances that are grounded with memorable, likeable characters and a strong sense of place.”
Gabe Evans is a man of his word with strong convictions and steadfast loyalty. As the sheriff of Splendor, Montana, the ex-Union Colonel and oldest of four boys from an affluent family, Gabe understands the meaning of responsibility. The last thing he wants is another commitment—especially of the female variety.
Until he meets Lena Campanel...
Lena’s past is one she intends to keep buried. Overcoming a childhood of setbacks and obstacles, she and her friend, Nick, have succeeded in creating a life of financial success and devout loyalty to one another.
When an unexpected death leaves Gabe the sole heir of a considerable estate, partnering with Nick and Lena is a lucrative decision…forcing Gabe and Lena to work together. As their desire grows, Lena refuses to let down her guard, vowing to keep her past hidden—even from a perfect man like Gabe.
But secrets never stay buried…
When revealed, Gabe realizes Lena’s secrets are deeper than he ever imagined. For a man of his character, deception and lies of omission aren’t negotiable. Will he be able to forgive the deceit? Or is the damage too great to ever repair?
Great Romance Novel
This is book four from the series and I have enjoyed all of them. Shirleen Davies is a great author and I was taken in by this novel yet again. The characters, Lena and Gabe are written well, and I felt like I was back in time with this story. They never expected to fall in love, but there are some obstacles in the way, as there are secrets hidden in the past. It is exciting to see if they overcome any obstacles on this historical journey. Can't wait to read more from this author.
I've been following this series for a while now, and I've enjoyed every one. Shirleen Davies knows how to bring the old west to life, and you would feel like you've traveled, with the characters, to the frontier. I think the Redemption Mountain series is as good as historical romance gets: a vivid setting, memorable characters, love, and lots at stake. I especially loved Lena, and I thought that her past was written well--gave her a lot of depth. Another great book from Shirleen Davies and I hope there will be more to come!
Western Romance with Adventure and Suspense
“Dixie Moon” is a historical Western romance, and though it’s part of the Redemption Mountain series, this one easily stands alone; it’s got an epic sweep that nicely captures the possibility and adventure of the Old West, but still focuses on developing its characters and their relationships with one another.
The story starts with heartbreak—Lena has lost her virginity and her money to a man she loved and who she thought loved her. Fast forward to a few years later, and the very mention of his name can still drive her into a faint; now she and her friend Nick are proprietors of a saloon in Splendor, Montana, and her ex-lover has struck it rich in a nearby goldmine. Yet Lena finds herself softening in a way she never thought possible to another man: the town sheriff, Gabe. When she nurses him back to health after a shooting, she’s certain he feels the same way toward her…but they both have secrets and vulnerabilities standing in the way of their love….
One of my favorite things about the women in this series of novels is that they’re strong and capable, and Lena is no different—I liked that she picked herself up from past trauma and has become a successful businesswoman. Her independence makes her growing relationship with Gabe all the richer, and her struggle toward letting herself fall for him despite her past is convincing and connects you to her as a reader. The suspense works on two levels in this novel—both whether or not Lena and Gabe will be able to come together, and whether Lena’s past will collide with her present and ruin it. I also enjoyed the subplot with Dolly, and the realistic danger she faces as a result of her line of work; that’s a gritty touch that adds to the danger already present in the book from Willie and his associates.
Recommended to readers who enjoy Western romance; both those who are already fans of the Redemption Mountain books and those who are coming to it for the first time should find this novel entertaining and engaging.
