DIY Magic

A Strange and Whimsical Guide to Creativity

This book can be downloaded and read in Apple Books on your Mac or iOS device.

DIY MAGIC offers a series of reality hacks encompassing self-help, philosophy, psychology, and inspiration, that will help artists, writers, and any creative types find new sources of inspiration.

This is a book of magic. This is a book of mind hacks. This is a cookbook for creativity.
In DIY Magic, Anthony Alvarado provides readers with a collection of techniques for accessing deeper levels of creative thought—for hacking into their subconscious. From Salvador Dali's spoon technique and ornithomancy (divination by crows), to bibliomancy and using (legal) stimulants, the exercises in this book will help anyone chasing the muse—from artists and musicians, to writers and more—as they tug at the strings of everyday reality and tap into the magic of their own minds.

From the Trade Paperback edition.

From Publishers Weekly

Feb 09, 2015 – Reprinted from a now-out-of-print small-press edition, Alvarado's creativity manual offers 36 different exercises in what he describes as "the fine art of driving yourself insane!" Ranging from surrealist parlor games to divination techniques, each exercise is presented in relaxed language and usually requires little to no equipment. The different practices can be performed in any order, allowing readers to construct their own course of exploration and development. The varied techniques are presented apart from any particular mystical tradition, so that readers following different spiritual paths can use them. Though some sections address methods (such as the tarot and yoga) that are too complex to be squeezed into a short presentation, others offer suitable introductions to ideas outside traditional magic, such as the field of psychogeography. Alvarado seeks to create altered awareness in a way that is accessible, and the exercises he provides can be done alone or by small groups.

Bought this TWICE

I bought the printed edition a couple of months ago, and liked it so much I decided to buy the e-Book (the iBook) of it so I can also read on my iPhone and iPad. Very useful advice, much of it is "common sense" and certainly "self-transformation" magic, which is the most important kind.
