~"AMAZING ... especially if you're a "Little Mermaid" fan, which I totally am." - Heidi McLaughlin, New York Times bestselling author of Forever My Girl
~"Your book is beautiful, Katy. It's the perfect balance of sweet and sexy. I love the writing. I love the characters. You have me sighing like a damn teenager." - Leylah Attar, New York Times bestselling author of The Paper Swan
From New York Times bestseller Katy Regnery comes a new twist on a beloved fairytale.
A fisherman's daughter.
The governor's son.
Two very different worlds.
In this modern retelling of The Little Mermaid, a fisherman's daughter from an Outer Banks island untouched by time, meets the son of North Carolina's governor at a fancy party where she's working.
Laire, who wants so much more from life than her little island can offer, is swept away by wealthy, sophisticated Erik, who is, in turn, entranced by her naiveté and charm. The two spend a whirlwind summer together that ends on the knife-point of heartbreak and forces them to go their separate ways.
Years later, when fate leads them back to one another, they will discover the terrifying depth of the secrets they kept from each other, and learn that shattered hearts can only be healed by a love that willfully refuses to die.
**Contemporary Romance. Due to profanity, adult themes and very strong sexual content, this book is not intended for readers under the age of 18.**

Don't Speak is a twist on The Little Mermaid and it is interesting! It includes my least favorite trope though, the dreaded 'miscommunication'. Laire and Erik are in love and things are great and swooning is happening. Then Erik's mother starts scheming and there is a misunderstanding...and they are separated.
Laire (an anagram of Ariel) is so naive. However it was believable really. She grew up on a remote island in NC so you can understand how she would be a little unaware of the rest of the world. Erik on the other hand is a rich son of a governor so there is no innocence there at all! Regnery's writing makes you able to vividly 'see' the setting and that really makes for great books. While there is some angst, it wasn't overly angsty which I always appreciate.
So, Don't Speak was good. In my opinion, a little predictable, a little contrived, but sweet and swoony none the less. If you like your naive heroines, you will like Laire. If you like the opposites attract trope, you will enjoy Don't Speak. Some of the references to The Little Mermaid seemed contrived and had me rolling my eyes. But, I am kind of cynical so....
