Double the romance…
Charismatic Dwight Conner is the most popular player on the Kilby Catfish, but he’s more than ready to leave behind the tumbleweeds of Texas for the Major League crowds of San Diego. With his skills and stats, it makes no sense that he hasn’t gotten called up yet. Unless it has something to do with the team’s gorgeous new “whiz kid”—data specialist Maggie Blythe.
Maggie jumped at the chance to put her graduate thesis to work in the real world. But she had no idea the real world of baseball would be so…irresistible. Especially when her roommate Nina drags her on a double date with a certain outrageously sexy centerfielder who decides to give her some hands-on instruction.
Double the fun…
Shortstop Jim Lieberman has been eating his heart out over Nina Stark ever since he nearly landed in her lap chasing a foul ball. Two things stand in his way—nerves and Nina’s overprotective All-Star brother. Maybe a double date with his friend Dwight will break the ice so he can stake his claim.
Nina’s dream is simple. She wants a family and a normal life after a childhood of turmoil. The problem? She’s secretly in love with the one man who apparently will never ask her out. Double date? Sure. Count her in. But the adorable Jim “Bieberman” still has to step up.
Cue the miscues, the call-ups, the on-field miracles, and the off-field disasters. In this Love Between the Bases novel, can two star-crossed couples add up to double the happy ever after?
Double Play, Double Love
Double Play, by Jennifer Bernard, is the fourth book in her Love Between the Bases series and again Ms. Bernard hits this story out of the park. Our heroes are center fielder Dwight Connor and shortstop Jim Lieberman of the Kilby Catfish, a triple A baseball team in Kilby, Texas. Jim has fallen for Nina but is afraid of her big bother. He doesn’t know how to act when he’s around her and needs to step up his game. The heroines are Nina Stark, Trevor’s sister who has fallen for Jim, and newcomer Maggie Blythe, the whiz-kid who has written a program designed to analyze baseball player’s data.
Dwight is fascinated with Maggie and has her join Jim and Nina on a double date. Dwight can’t figure out why he hasn’t been called up to the big leagues yet. He falls hard for Maggie as does Maggie for him. Nina only wants a family to love but she needs Jim to stand up for himself and prove that he really cares for and loves her. There are a number of missteps and cross communication that causes all sorts of mischief as Jim and Dwight get called up for the big dance in San Diego, leaving Nina and Maggie behind in Kilby.
I truly loved reading this book. Ms. Bernard, an outstanding story teller, did an outstanding job keeping me interested in this story. I highly recommend this book to other readers and am looking forward to the next entry in this series.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.
Double The Fun
Dwight and Jim are popular players on the Kilby Baseball team. They both believe they're on the verge of being called up to "the show", but something's holding them back...
Maggie strikes out on her own to be a statistician for Kilby and other non-pro baseball teams. Maggie developed a computer program that helps determine if a ball player is ready to advance to the next level of play. It also helps determine if they'll successfully adjust to the pressures of playing at a higher level.
Nina, Maggie's roommate, is a simple girl with simple dreams. Although she's young, she's experienced horrible trauma early in life. Trevor, a pro baseball player and Nina's brother, takes overprotective to a new level! He's warned everyone to stay away from his sister, even Jim Bieberman. Nina has a crush on Jim, but can't seem to "catch" his eye. Jim, on the other hand, longs to ask Nina out but gets so flustered when he sees her, that he usually makes a fool of himself. He's also deathly afraid of Trevor! Until he can finally stand up to Trevor and profess his love for Nina, things are at a standstill.
Dwight, sensing that Maggie's computer program is holding him back, tries to "charm" answers out of her. As they get to know one another, Dwight is suddenly called up. As much as he wants to play pro, he thinks Maggie had something to do with his sudden promotion. He leaves town and his budding relationship with Maggie in the dust. While there, Dwight plays the worst three games of his life. He's sent back down while Jim is called up....
I loved the quirkiness of Nina and Jim. I loved how she "got" him and his nerdiness! Although Nina had simple dreams in life, I loved how fierce, strong, and loving she was. I loved that she had extremely brilliant friends, but didn't feel "less than". Maggie was a fierce warrior! Born with health issues and overprotective parents, she yearned to live her own life. She loved Dwight for who he was, no matter where he played ball. I also enjoyed the interracial aspect of the story! I truly enjoyed this novel! I read a gifted copy and all opinions stated are my own.
Loved it!! Loved going back to Kilby with double the fun and double romance. A great story featuring Dwight Connor and Jim Lieberman, both Kilby Catfish players ready for their chance at the show. Neither make it out of Kilby before cupid strikes. First is Dwight and the new data manager Maggie Blythe. Different as can be but perfect for each other. Then there's Jim Lieberman and Nina Stark. The woman he's been drooling over forever but was too afraid to ask her out. Can these guys have it all? The women they love and a chance at the bigs?? You'll want to find out what happens! I highly recommend you grab a copy of this one.
