When another ship crashes after a fierce battle, Jack rescues the sole survivor-- a K'da warrior names Draycos. It turns out Draycos can help Jack clear his name. All they have to do is team up. No problem, right?

From Publishers Weekly

Feb 03, 2003 – Less complex than such recent novels as Manta's Giftand Angelmass, this start to a new SF adventure series from Hugo Award-winner Zahn will appeal largely to younger readers. Fourteen-year-old orphan Jack Morgan, former small-time thief, is on the run, framed for theft from megacorporation Braxton Universis. Hiding out on an unoccupied planet, his only companion an artificial intelligence programmed with the personality of his con man uncle Virge, Jack witnesses a battle between incoming spaceships. While looking over the wreckage, he meets Draycos, a dragon-like K'da, sole survivor of an advance team of K'da and their Shontine allies murdered by their enemies, the Valahgua, with a terrible energy weapon called "the Death." With Valahgua-backed mercenaries searching the planet for survivors, Jack and Draycos work together to escape. Despite Virge's continuing doubts, Jack agrees to help Draycos find out who betrayed his people; but first they must prove Jack's innocence and get the police off his back. Along the way, each will earn the other's trust as they learn to work together as a team. Zahn keeps the story moving at a breakneck pace, maintaining excitement even when the plot becomes clich d.

A good book

I picked this book up out of curiosity, and to be honest, while it was a little bit cliche, it was an overall good read. I liked the character dynamics and personalities, especially Draycos. There could have been more set up and construction to the setting and universe, but again, it was an entertaining read.

So good!

I can't not express how much I want you to read this book! I picked this book up from my sister, she used to read it to me and my brother. It's a little hard on the start, but absolute, fantastic, unique gold once it get a little ways through! I do have one problem, and it's with these Ebook's cover art. I've read all these books, so I know what Draycos looks like. He doesn't have wings! If he did, the story would be completely different! The hard cover (or soft cover) copy is the exact same, but no wings, as Zahn designed him! Anyways, that's the only thing that bothers me, and it's hardly important! DFTBA!

Great series!

Just the first book in a great series - one of my all-time favorites.
