Description

Fans of Jasinda Wilder and Colleen Hoover will adore this emotional new small-town romance—a smoldering tale of first love and long-awaited redemption from USA Today bestselling author Tina Wainscott.

Raleigh West works in an auto shop day and night, trying to put his broken past out of mind. It’s been seven years since the fiery crash that landed his teenage sweetheart in the hospital . . . and him in jail. In an instant, he lost everything: his passion for racing, his hope of escaping his father’s shameful legacy, and the only girl he ever loved. Raleigh hasn’t seen her since that awful night. Never got a chance to apologize. And never forgave himself, either.

When brave, beautiful Mia Wentworth returns to the Florida coast for the first time in what seems like forever, it’s not to see Raleigh. Even so, the moment she arrives she can feel his presence like a gust of wind that gives her goose bumps. Opening her heart to him again seems impossible. But staying away? That might be harder still. Lucky for them both, Mia’s never been the kind of woman to take the easy way out.

Praise for Falling Fast

“An emotionally charged story about two people with wounded pasts, and deeply buried secrets, who find their way back to one another.”New York Times bestselling author Patricia Rosemoor

Falling Fast has wonderful characters you’ll hold in your heart forever. I couldn’t stop reading until I found out if these two star-crossed lovers would be able to survive all the challenges keeping them apart.”New York Times bestselling author Kathy Clark

“Wainscott comes back to her roots. . . . Her early fans will be happy here with the suspense and mystery that play into secondary plots, but romance is the primary vein in this novel. This first title in a promising new series will have readers anxiously awaiting the next entries.”Library Journal (starred review)

“The characters are sure to win you over and have you pulling for them to overcome the odds!”—I Smell Sheep

Falling Fast was [the] first novel I have read by Tina Wainscott, but it definitely won’t be my last. It was a great romance filled with passion and emotion, and it was also a book filled with love, forgiveness, and the importance of second chances.”—Devilishly Delicious Book Reviews

“Excellent . . . [an] amazing new series [with] lots of heart and hope!”—I Have a Book Obsession

“[Tina Wainscott] did a really great job of developing the characters and I really liked seeing Mia and Raleigh heal together whilst rekindling their relationship.”—Broc’s Bookcase

“This story ended up taking a completely different turn than I had expected. The book starts off as a forbidden love story and it ends up taking a suspenseful turn. The author transitioned [between] the two themes very well by blending Mia and Raleigh’s love story together with a ghost from Raleigh’s past.”—Wicked Women Book Blog

Falling Fast is a lovely tale of lost love [and] finding your way back to your soul mate. It is done with style and grace. The story will pull you in and keep you turning pages just to see what happens.”—Bitten by Love

Loved This Captivating Romance

Received a ARC through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Loved this well written and captivating story about Loss and Love. Loved these characters they were well developed, deeply emotional, heartbreaking and poignant. This makes you realize the importance of living every moment with no regrets, loving passionately and taking the time to truly enjoy life with the ones you love.
Mia Wentworth was diagnosed with cancer at the age of eight years old and battled it for seven years. Mia has lived a sheltered life, overbearing parents, home schooled with no friends she is looking forward to the summer to go visit her grandmother in Chambliss a tiny town by the sea, where no one will know anything about her. She had just turned seventeen and has been cancer free for two years when she met Raleigh West and although it was to be a summer fling, they both fell hard and fast, with her first kiss, her first relationship, giving up her virginity. She had faced death every day and for the first time, she felt alive when she was with him.
Raleigh West was nineteen when he met Mia. He had lost his mother when he was five, and was the son of the town's drunk. He had been living on his own since he was fifteen and was a mechanic working on cars and then racing them at night. One night he lets Mia come with him when he races and they are in a terrible accident with both of them being burned and hurt. After the accident Raleigh is sent to prison for a year and is never allowed contact with Mia again, he sends letters but never receives a response. He develops a relationship with her grandmother trying to atone for what he did to Mia by helping her with chores and renovations around her house and in turn she gives him information about Mia.
When a devastating circumstance throws them together will their past help them or hurt them? Is their love lost forever our will forgiveness heal them? But what will happen when secrets are exposed? Loved this Captivating Romance!

A second chance at romance is the premise

A second chance at romance is the premise of this story: a car accident had left Mia, a wealthy teen visiting the area for the summer, disfigured. Raleigh is the boy from the wrong side of the tracks: never quite enough, and certainly not right for the girl whose life he ruined.

The premise is a good one: there is a solid redemption / growth trajectory for both of the characters, from both the accident and its aftermath and their own lives. Despite having everything, Mia has lived with cancer for years. Raleigh had a drunk and abusive father that led him to leave home at 15. Neither one has, since that summer before the accident, had a relationship that felt so ‘right’.

The potential for a lovely story, gripping and emotional, with plenty of back and forth was high. Insets/flashbacks from that first summer would have added to the depth and draw. All of this was flattened in the arc and pacing. With easy forgiveness of Raleigh from Mia, the story had no poll: there was no real groveling or amends made stretching my suspension of disbelief beyond the breaking point. Then, add to that odd choice, the pacing that is painfully slow as they are thrown together because of a joint bequest. I just had real problems getting into the story as it unfolded and progressed, and the lack of my ability to believe in the storyline had me frustrated more often than not.

Characters were portrayed with a decent amount of depth and interest, and their backstories (particularly Raleigh’s) were full of emotional moments without delving into pathos. I expected a bit more drama and angst, but it was, again, flattened by the odd plotting choices – there should have been more of a lead in to Mia’s forgiveness, and the entire story had me feeling as if she held the power in the relationship without actually understanding or knowing what to do with it. I’m wondering if the all-too-quick forgiveness will fracture with more time, but only the next book will tell that tale.

I received an eArc copy of the title from the publisher via NetGalley for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.
