Description

A star quarterback and a feisty detective play for keeps in this sporty, sexy, sassy novel—a long-awaited new entry in the beloved, award-winning, New York Times bestselling author’s fan-favorite Chicago Stars football series.

Piper Dove is a woman with a dream—to become the best detective in the city of Chicago. First job? Trail former Chicago Stars quarterback, Cooper Graham. Problem? Graham’s spotted her, and he’s not happy.

Which is why a good detective needs to think on her feet. “The fact is . . . I’m your stalker. Not full-out barmy. Just . . . mildly unhinged.”

Piper soon finds herself working for Graham himself, although not as the bodyguard he refuses to admit he so desperately needs. Instead, he’s hired her to keep an eye on the employees at his exclusive new nightclub. But Coop’s life might be in danger, and Piper’s determined to protect him, whether he wants it or not. (Hint: Not!) If only she weren’t also dealing with a bevy of Middle Eastern princesses, a Pakistani servant girl yearning for freedom, a teenager who just wants of fit in, and an elderly neighbor demanding Piper find her very dead husband.

And then there’s Cooper Graham himself, a legendary sports hero who always gets what he wants—even if what he wants is a feisty detective hell bent on proving she’s as tough as he is.

From the bustling streets of Chicago to a windswept lighthouse on Lake Superior to the glistening waters of Biscayne Bay, two people who can’t stand to lose will test themselves and each other to discover what matters most.

From Publishers Weekly

Jul 04, 2016 – Phillips continues her popular contemporary Chicago Stars series (after Natural Born Charmer) with an utterly delightful standalone gambol that pairs up recently retired Stars quarterback Cooper Graham and private detective Piper Dove. Coop knows what he wants to do with his post-football life—start a trendy nightclub called Spiral—or at least he thinks he does. But he can’t seem to make the venture’s financial numbers add up. Piper is also having money trouble: she’s being paid to tail Coop, but when he spots her, the client drops her, leaving her at poverty’s doorstep. When she reveals to Coop that he’s being robbed by his nightclub staff, they launch into a relationship with all the head-butting explosiveness of an NFL game, plus frequent diversions into steamier contact sports. As usual, Phillips’s Chicago landscape is dotted with plenty of interesting local scenery, plus juicy details of high-end clothing, accessories, and decor. She has a knack for nuance and stage-setting that grounds her characters and makes them feel perfectly real. Fans and newcomers alike are certain to fall in love with this delightful pair as they scrimmage and score.

Customer Reviews

Yes! Yes! Yesssssss!

Loved every word, paragraph, page, and chapter! I kept checking to see how much of the book I had left to enjoy.

SEP had me laughing with the witty back and forth between the main characters. I loved the tough little lady who was confident enough to take on guys twice her size. The main man was so unexpected. I thought he would be super full of himself but he was all heart.

SEP, when is the next one out?!?! Please don't make us wait!!! 😭

Amazing

First Star I See Tonight by Susan Elizabeth Phillips is one of the best written stories I’ve read this year. It’s the story of Chicago Stars’ retired Quarterback Cooper Graham and detective Piper Dove.

Piper is investigation Cooper for a client by following him around Chicago. As their interactions continue Piper is found out and has to stop working for her client. However, Cooper hires her to help solve some irregularities at his nightclub. The longer these two work together, the more they discover that they care for each other. There are other events that happen in this book that involve Piper and Cooper but mainly indirectly. There’s the freeing of a servant from a royal family. Then there’s the solving the mystery of who is trying to sabotage Cooper’s nightclub to ensure that he will not get the financial support he’s been seeking for expansion. There’s also the person who’s been out to hurt Cooper. Piper becomes his bodyguard to keep him safe.

This was a fun and entertaining story with loveable characters that you want to know and hang out with. Susan Elizabeth Phillips displays what she does best, writing a story that enfolds the reader with humor and a wonderful story line. Her characters were well written, authentic and complex. The story line was riveting and kept my attention to the very end, as I read this book in one day. I could not put this book down. I genuinely enjoyed reading this book. I highly recommend this book to other readers.

Disappointing

Her books used to be so great. I used to have trouble pacing myself and always ended up reading the whole thing in a day. This one took a week to finish. The characters were a bit lackluster and I felt that everything just got squeezed in at the end. And where's her side stories?! I was waiting to read about Jada and Eric's side story like SEP usually does. This happened with her last book too. I honestly feel ripped off. I don't think I'll be buying anymore of her books bc it seems like SEP is more concerned about making money than writing great romance novels like she used to.
