A mesmerizing novel of faith, passion, and murder by the author of The Civil War: A Narrative. Drawing on themes as old as the Bible, Foote's novel compels us to inhabit lives obsessed with sin and starving for redemption. A work reminiscent of both Faulkner and O'Connor, yet utterly original.
From the Trade Paperback edition.
This is one of my favorite books of all time. Shelby Foote, a world class historian, is lesser known as a novelist, and that's a shame. The story revolves around Eustis, a married 50 year old who runs away to an island with an 18 year old girl (Beulah), has guilt feelings after about 3 weeks and decides to go back to his family. The girl threatens to tell his wife so he kills her. The beauty of the story is that it is told from the viewpoint of multiple people, including Eustis and Beaulah, Eustis's lawyer, a court reporter and others. While the facts don't change, each person's viewpoint is unique. The story unfolds in the post- WWII Deep South (Mississippi), which adds an interesting dimension to the tale.
