From Ice to Ashes

This book can be downloaded and read in iBooks on your Mac or iOS device.

A humble laborer is caught in the tensions between Earth and Titan, the now-colonized moon of Saturn, in a standalone novel set in the universe of Titanborn (“Sci-fi noir at its finest!”—David Simpson, author of the Post-Human series).

Kale Drayton knows his place. As a Ringer born on Titan, he’s used to keeping his head down and his mouth shut—no matter how much the Earthers abuse him or his own kind berate him. So when he’s caught stealing from a wealthy merchant, he’s lucky to be sentenced to low-paying maintenance work on a gas-harvesting ship instead of life in a cell . . . or worse.

But when his mother is quarantined, Kale finds himself backed into a corner. To pay for her medicine, he needs money—the kind of money he’ll never make sweeping floors and cleaning ships. So when he receives a mysterious offer asking him to do a simple job in exchange for his mother’s treatment, Kale takes a chance once more. All he has to do is upload a program onto his employer’s ship and all of his problems will disappear.

What starts as a straightforward smuggling gig soon reveals its shattering repercussions. The people who hired Kale are more dangerous than he suspected—and he’s more important to them than he ever could have imagined.

From Publishers Weekly

Feb 20, 2017 – In this standalone set in the same world as 2016's Titanborn, a desperate man is caught up in the racial and economic strife between the natives of Titan, known as Ringers, and the Earthers who have subjugated and exploited them for decades. Kale Drayton is determined to save his mother, who's quarantined and dying from a mysterious illness. When he's given a chance to cure her, he reluctantly accepts, even though it means smuggling an item onto the gas harvesting ship on which he works. This is just the opening gambit of an insurrection led by the Children of Titan, who have much bigger plans for Kale as they struggle to free themselves from Earther oppression. Bruno uses skillful worldbuilding and rising tension to construct a fast-paced, action-packed tale of the far future, but the core plot humble nobody discovers his true heritage while joining a rebellion against a corrupt authority is all too familiar. There's value in Kale's depiction as a desperate underdog and hapless thief, but it's lost as his story develops in a predictable manner.

Customer Reviews

An Immersive and Detailed Universe!

I received an ARC of this book with the option of leaving an honest review.

In Titanborn, readers were able to see the Ringer revolution from a Collector's point of view. In From Ice to Ashes, readers get a chance to learn more about the revolution from a Ringer's perspective as we learn more about the discrimination, exploitation, and hardship that Ringers must endure.

I think that Kale's character is an incredibly well-developed character. Rather than sharing all of Kale's history at once, Bruno gives readers enough information to understand and empathize with the desperation that Kale felt; the same desperation that drove him to complete what was supposedly a harmless task. As the plot progresses at a fairly quick pace, readers learn more about Kale and discover that his family history is more complex than we initially thought.

Like Titanborn, From Ice to Ashes has Star Wars-like action and plot twists in an immersive and detailed universe that will leave you wanting more. I really had a hard time putting this book down and plan to re-read it soon.

Adventure + Sci-fi + Thriller

Elements of surprise and cross genre mix created this intriguing tale!

It didn't make me forget the world nor burn dinner, but it did continuously call me back to finish the mission :)

I would recommend this to anyone who wants a new book and to test the Outer Limits. Wonderful world building without too much 'info dump'.
