I began blogging at Whole Life Gardening in October of 2008. For nearly five years I posted thoughts about how the garden connects to everything else. In fact, for one year I pledged to post every day, and was successful in this promise even when unexpectedly hospitalized. This book is a collection of some of those posts, which have been edited, and often expanded upon.
My goal when I began this blog was to start in the garden and move into the rest of my life. How does what’s happening in the landscape relate to work, health, spirituality and family? Could what is going on in the garden teach me something about friendship, weight loss or creativity? Be the issues trivial and day-to-day, or extremely important subjects, might gardens guide us as we deal with life’s struggles?
The mesh that I have endeavored to weave at Whole Life Gardening is one that I know to be endlessly interesting, beautiful, and mysterious. It is the relationship of garden and gardener, working together for life.
You and I are connected. We are linked to the insects, earthworms, weather, flowers, weeds, dirt, spirit, and each other. And all of that links up with everything else that we do; I look forward to celebrating that with you.
