From Publishers Weekly

Oct 03, 2011 – Comedian and former Saturday Night Live regular Hammond gained fame in the 90s for his impersonation of Bill Clinton, among others. Although it includes the expected visit to rehab, Hammond's moving memoir contains surprising detours, such as his revelations about cutting himself. The book starts off with a bang: on the first page, Hammond is in rehab after getting drunk and trying to cut his arm off with a kitchen knife. Hammond's breezy style and facile storytelling will keep readers entertained even while reading about his struggle with alcoholism, including the time he attended Clinton's second inauguration, confronted an in-room display of Grand Marnier, and ended up on the floor of the National Airport still in his tuxedo. Hammond's depiction of his Florida childhood shows how the abuse dealt by his parents, especially his mother, resulted in a life of dysfunction, yet also gave him his profession—he learned to do voices as protection from his mother. This funny man's serious life can be an inspiration to all.

Customer Reviews

Not as interesting as I expected

The book starts out moderately interesting but then quickly turns into a rambling, ego-boosting, name dropping story, reminiscent of someone attempting to give props to the celebrities he's met.

For instance, there seems to be a lot of "so and so came on the show. He was a really nice guy." There are also a fair number of references to very specific SNL skits that require the reader to know the sketch in order to find the humor or insightful meaning. Finally, he throws in a large number of f-bombs, in an attempt to keep it edgy. Instead he comes off sounding trite, much like someone attempting to take on the same attitude as James Frey in a "Million Little Pieces".

It's not the best read. I found myself getting bored and I had to push myself to finish it. There are worse reads but I'd probably say save the money buying it and borrow from a friend.

This guy is amazing...

I remember his first episode on SNL, always have loved his humor, and to hear his story is amazing... What an inspiration.

Really? I have to give this review a title?

Awesome read I couldn't put it down.
