A heartfelt and hilarious mystery from this bestselling and award-winning author of the What Doesn’t Kill You romantic mystery series.

When a dead body swan-dives from a balcony into the pool at a wedding, gossip comes to a halt about disgraced paralegal and former rodeo queen Emily—whose husband left her for a woman who turns out to be a man. Enter Jack, a secretive attorney and sexy mix of cowboy and Indian. She refuses to work for him, until she learns about the disappearance of the six-year old daughter of his notorious client Sofia, the wedding shooter, who is also an illegal immigrant. Emily feels a strange affinity with the girl and launches a desperate search for her. Bodies pile up in her wake across Texas and New Mexico as the walls around her own secrets begin to crumble, and the authorities question whether the child is anything but a figment of her imagination.

Heaven to Betsy:

Book 5
You kept me guessing right to the end. Look forward to reading more of your work

Racist depictions against immigrants

Of course with the new president and all, it became common and okay to discredit immigrants and be racist. Please work on accurately depicting immigrants, if you can't? Leave your biases out of you workload. It's considered professional.

Chick Lit

As a Texan, the writer made me feel I misjudged Amarillo. I hate it there, it's kind of a hole, but she makes it sound kind of fun.
Anyway, I like the characters in the story. This is the first book I've read of the series, (even though it's book #5), and there's a fun group of characters in this story.
Only three stars because I'm a guy, and I just couldn't bear the unending sadness about the false pregnancy part of the story - it was very heavy handed, which makes me think this author appeals to woman more than men. Or wants to, at least, because it was hard to care more than a couple pages.
Speaking of not caring, this whole book is about finding Valentina, it's almost an obsession. Meanwhile, Valentina's mother was killed after two days in prison and no one seems to give that a second thought. We don't even know if she was murdered or fell in a mid whole. Kind of inconsistent.
So great characters, weak writing, and it's more a romantic book than I care for, so I won't be reading her work again.
