Grand Prize Winner 2014 Hollywood Book Festival - Grand Prize Winner 2014 Southern California Book Festival - Every year, thousands of people from all over the world move to Hollywood, with nothing more than their hopes and an irrational sense of romanticism and fairness, to pursue their dreams of fame and fortune. Rather than wait tables, struggling actor Jason Lassen opted to perform at children's birthday parties and quickly found out how competitive and political they are. One moment finding himself at Steven Spielberg's house, hoping against hope to be discovered while sweating through a Teletubbies costume, and the next dressed as a faux-Honey Bear with a gun to his head in Compton. During his wildly event-filled journey, he discovers it doesn't matter how much money or fame you have, true happiness comes from within.
I was intrigued to read this book, not really knowing what to expect, but thinking the subject matter would make for an enjoyable read. This book met that expectation, but ended up being so much more. The author unabashedly shares his life experiences as an actor trying to make it in Hollywood while earning his living as a performer at children's birthday parties. For everyone who has ever wondered who is under the character masks of Barney, Elmo, or any other beloved child hero's costume, this book not only lifts the mask; it takes you inside the performer's journey, sharing all the humorous thoughts, witty banter, shocking moments, physical and emotional challenges, triumphs, decisions and sacrifices he made along the way to help bring joy to other people's kids, and ultimately, to his own life and the dreams he has for his future.
Without meaning to sound trite, I laughed, I cried, I gasped at times, and I was completely drawn into his journey every step of the way. From comedy to tragedy, erotica to celebrity tell-all, this book has something in it for everyone.
