Book 1, Of Love and War

This book can be downloaded and read in iBooks on your Mac or iOS device.

With her brothers away fighting the Great War overseas, Livy Campbell desperately wants to help her family. Her chance comes when she meets a handsome stranger who lands her a job as a teacher in a place far from her parents' farm. But the war casts a long shadow over the German-American town that Livy now calls home-and the darkness will test everything she thought she knew about family and love . . .

More than anything, Friedrick Wagner wants to be part of his adopted country's struggle for peace. But when the bitter animosity between Germans and Americans soon turns citizens against newcomers, friend against friend, he will do whatever it takes to protect Livy from the hysteria that grips their town. As tragedy-and dark secrets from the past-threaten their future, Friedrick and Livy have one chance to stand up for what's right . . . and one chance to fight for their love.

From Publishers Weekly

May 26, 2014 – Henrie's first Of Love and War smalltown inspirational, set in 1918, pairs newly-minted schoolteacher Livy Campbell with morally upright immigrant Friedrick Wagner in a sweet romance imperiled by ethnic bigotry. After Livy is abandoned at a dance by her drunken fianc , a handsome stranger dances with her and tips her off about a job in Hilden, Iowa, where many German immigrants live. Though at first Livy fears the Germans are disloyal to the U.S., she soon becomes outraged by the way other townspeople treat them. Her attraction to Friedrick makes her concerns very personal. Anti-German sentiment on the home front, a disgruntled suitor, and the influenza epidemic slightly enliven a relationship whose scant internal conflict is too easily resolved. Though the romance is low-key, readers seeking enlightening historical detail or a comforting story in which faith and rectitude overcome bigotry will be entertained.
