In How Did You End Up Here, writer, reporter, and documentary filmmaker, Davy Rothbart collects 140 of his all-time favorite questions to ask someone you've just met, generated by people around North America whom he's only just met himself. He opens his toolbox, sharing secrets of his trade, stories from the road, and strategies for approaching people and pushing past superficialities to create meaningful connections in the most serendipitous moments. Through this collection of strange, funny, absurd and surprising questions, Rothbart has honed a unique talent for compassionately probing into the lives of strangers and drawing out stories of beauty, heartbreak, and humor.
How did you end up here?
I interview alot of people I just meet as a video producer. While crew is setting up camera and lights, checking sound and such I spend time with my interview before the video rolls. This is always awkward Because I want fresh answers to my prepared questions.
So I pretend to ask some questions my "staff" wanted me to ask. Many people are very nervous about being on camera so asking questions from the book "How did you end up here" has been a great resource to get people to relax. The questions from the staff of course are off camera but are so outrageous and unexpected that I build a better relationship and get a better interview. When ready to roll I dramatically crumple up the "staff" questions wonder what were they thinking and begin the real interview. The book should be required reading for journalism classes.
