How to Diagnose a Changeling (The Starsboro Chronicles: Season 1 Episode 2)
Cameron J Quinn
This book can be downloaded and read in iBooks on your Mac or iOS device.
Who would believe a mother that her child is missing when he's standing right next to her? Dr. Rachel Donahue is terrified of the child sleeping next to her and has no where to turn in this episode of The Starsboro Chronicles.
Morgan might be in a full leg cast but when she makes a connection between some cases involving mothers and mysterious deaths, it doesn't take her long to break the rules and look to the D'Vordi brothers for help.
If they are going to save a mother who's gone mad, they need to find a way to work together and around the Catholic Church.
Great Mixture of Old Myths and Modern Issues
The second Starsboro Chronicle, How to Diagnose a Changeling, takes a dark turn. Detective Morgan still struggles with both the physical and the mental fallout from fighting the Fey -- her leg's in a cast and she's seeing myths come to life everywhere she looks. Then a series of cases involving dead parents and missing children pops up and she turns to the D'vordi brothers for answers. As the trio delve into a maze of supernatural kidnapping and shady adoptions, Morgan learns the dark world the D'vordi brothers live in extends far deeper into her own than she thought.
This second episode picked up right where the first left off. The world-building I missed in the first was present here -- the descriptions of Applewood Asylum were eerie and concise. I enjoyed the mixture of old myths and modern issues that Ms. Quinn blends so well. There was plenty of insight into the characters and how they work -- Morgan's battle with alcohol and the bothers' complicated family dynamics were woven into the fast-paced plot. Even Rachel, a character who was only with me for a single episode (so far), had clear development through her struggle with her seemingly alien child.
Looking forward to seeing the next plot twist in Quinn's third episode, How to Stalk a Stalker, out in March.
