Description

The final episode of The Human Division, John Scalzi's new thirteen-episode novel in the world of his bestselling Old Man's War. Beginning on January 15, 2013, a new episode of The Human Division will appear in e-book form every Tuesday.

At last, the Earth and the Colonial Union have begun formal discussions about their relationship in the future--a chance for the divisions in humanity to be repaired. The diplomats and crew of the Clarke are on hand to help with the process, including Ambassador Ode Abumwe and CDF Lieutenant Harry Wilson, both of whom were born on Earth. But not everyone wants The Human Division to be repaired...and they will go to great length to make sure it isn't.

Publishers Weekly Review

Mar 11, 2013 – Scalzi’s hectically paced and philosophical continuation of the Old Man’s War series is an invigorating and morally complex interstellar thriller with heart. The human Colonial Union has lost the trust of neighboring worlds due to allegations that it’s been delaying Earth’s technological development so it can “farm” Earth for colonists and soldiers. When the Polk, a Union ambassadorial starship, is obliterated while on a secret diplomatic mission with the alien Utche, the Union sends in a “B-team”—rebellious and unorthodox Lt. Harry Wilson, meek diplomatic assistant Hart Schmidt, and aggressive ambassador Abumwe—to seal negotiations and discover who (or what) destroyed the Polk. Scalzi injects the thrilling wonder of escapist science fiction with the painful despair of human betrayal and selfishness, focusing as much on conflicts of the heart as on warring alien civilizations. First released as digital serial installments, the book’s chapters reverberate with cliffhanger suspense, building and resolving a central conflict while building on more complex story arcs. Deeply realized characters and stinging webs of political and social deceit lend mystery and emotionally harsh realism to a thrilling setting of deep space and distant worlds.

Customer Reviews

very very unsatisfying ending

After 13 week of being doled out dribs and drabs of the story, we finally get to the end... and nothing is resolved. NOT. ONE. THING.

I don't have a problem with cliff hangers in general, but usually there is some sort of plot resolution or character development that gives a reader some resolution. But this Human Division series turned out to be slow torture. First, we are forced to wait for each installment, the when we get to the end, we discover it was basically pointless. Feels like a cruel ploy to sell a sequel. Shame on you Scalzi. Shame. Shame. Shame.

Don't stop now!

Who's behind it? Whats really going on? Come on! Keep going...

Also, a dollar should get me more than this a week. 13 was the longest by far and it wasn't even that much. Pretty soon I'm going to be paying $50 for a Scalzi novel. Come on, Scalzi! Surely you can treat your readers better than that.

Finishing strong

This was one of the better installments in the series and a strong closer. Looking forward to more serials, I hope.
