Set in Michigan during the Great Depression, Tending Ben’s Garden is the story of a big sister's fierce love for her younger brother. The youngest of five children, Little Ben is an uncommon child. His widowed mother decides that the best she can do for him is to send him to a children’s home.
Unable to accept that her baby brother has been adopted by a wealthy family, Kate sets out to bring him back. They should all be together, no matter how poor they are.
All the while that Ben is gone from them, Kate and her brothers tend to Ben’s Garden, keeping it, and their hope, alive while waiting for their brother’s return.
