A mother he thought he’d lost. A father he’s never known. An enemy that wants them dead.
At the age of five, Chase Day became an orphan. For thirty-one years, after a rebellious youth, he did his best to turn his life around and build a normal life—first as a Naval officer and then as a history professor at a boutique Bay Area college. Now, all that changes when he finds his mother, whom he thought had perished in a fire, dying from a gunshot wound. In her last breath, she urges him to find and protect the father he never knew. Where has his father been? Why has he never made contact? Can Chase discover why his family is a target before an unknown enemy destroys him?
“The frantic plot will keep readers on edge.” ~ Kirkus Reviews
Day of Secrets by Daryl Wood Gerber begins with Chase Day teaching a therapeutic art class and getting several phone calls that he sends to voice mail. A former lieutenant in the Navy, Chase now teaches War History at a college. Once the class is complete he gets another call, this time from his mother who has been dead for over 31 years asking for his help. This call sets into motion the entire rest of the story where Chase discovers secrets in his past and how by them being revealed he is threatened and target Numero Uno.
The first half of this book is a tad slow for me. I sometimes in this sort of fiction find myself wondering how an average Joe finds themselves in this situation. You need to suspend a lot of reality. But the writing is A+ and the story is cleverly crafted and plotted. I can only imagine the outlining that went into this book. For Daryl's cozy fans while this is more of a thrilling suspense, there is barely if any bad language or graphic depictions of sex. It can be a little gruesome though. Chase's poor face! Descriptions are also key here and they paint a picture so vivid you can see it in your mind.
