From sketch to finished work, the pages of IDOLS DEMONS SAINTS - reproducing preparatory “cartoons”, gouache studies, works in progress, completed paintings and the actual sketchbook pages - show the process of creating for the artist and teacher John Wellington.
Part visual journal and part art manual, IDOLS DEMONS SAINTS illustrates many examples of paintings in progress, demonstrating the Old Master techniques used and taught by the artist.
For more than thirty years John Wellington has created, copied, ruminated, lamented, critiqued, elucidated, explored and most importantly, drawn in sketchbooks. It is his great hope that this ebook will offer insight into a process of creating for artists, art students, and art lovers.
The best curated Museum exhibit never made
John Wellington has been creating art for decades, honing both his imagery and craft, staying true to his vision, building his skills as painter and teacher, nurturing the techniques of old masters, plunging headlong into modern iconography, under the oblivious noses of the art intelligencia. This iBook is a demonstration of both his creativity and perseverance--in it, he has basically created the gorgeous color catalogue for the most exciting show MOMA hasn't the insight to put on. Paging through this book brings an world-class art show right to your iPad, for one seventh the price.
Idols Demons Saints
For me as a painter, it was very helpful to peek into another artist's creative process, so fearlessly exposed and elegantly demonstrated. John Wellington shares useful information and practical advice about old master techniques. He points you to the right tools. The ibook reads very easily with art, music and cinema references and is engaging and joyful. The paintings are beautiful. I like how he uses text in his paintings. This book inspired me and I rushed to NY art supply store to get myself a sketchbook to start recording my own creative work!
The Creative Process
There are innumerable books on painting, creativity, technique, history, etcetera. This is one of the ONLY books which takes you 'step-by-step' through the ideas and the creative process with actual paintings, drawings, and notes. How extraordinary to see how a fine artist actually makes decision, includes or excludes, makes changes, all in the furtherance of the finished painting. In Mr. Wellington's case, the works are so beautifully painted, and fiercely adherent to the concepts he wishes the viewer to understand. Still embedding mystery and the hand of the artist; the books are fascinating as works of art in themselves.
We often find, posthumously, the inner thoughts of an artist. Now for the first time, they're here and available digitally, for everyone to see, the inner workings of a living Master. What a treat to have this insiders view of a great artist. Besides the classical treatises on art theory and technique; I will absolutely recommend this to all of my students and fellow artists. So very much looking forward to the publication of his earlier sketchbooks!
