Publisher Description

This award-winning* e-book focuses on an under-reported global crisis: statelessness. People who are stateless are not refugees, not exactly. Often they are living in their homes in a country they consider to be their own. Yet they are stateless—without the basic right to get an education, to work in the legal economy, receive health benefits, get married, vote or own property. The cause is often rooted in religion or ethnicity, but even when the stateless are not actively persecuted, they remain the most vulnerable. With reporting by Stephanie Hanes, and photography by Greg Constantine, this interactive book takes you on a journey to visit the stateless people of Kenya, Burma and the Dominican Republic.

    Exceptional

I was a big fan of the Pulitzer Center's "Voices of Haiti" iBook, so I moved onto this one. The production is absolutely beautiful and the storytelling stunning. Worth a long look by:
    - journalists in international or human rights arenas
    - news orgs looking for new venues for large projects
    - academics interested in conflict areas
    - multimedia students (the tools are remarkable)
(Disclosure: I know the digital producer on this one … and couldn't be more proud of his work!)

An evocative look at stateless life

Greg Constantine and Stephanie Hanes present a clear view on the complicated lives of people living without official citizenship, and the work being done to address the situation.

An Exploration of What it Means to be Stateless

Focused entirely on bringing to life the unimaginable plight of 12 million stateless people around the world, In Search of Home is a groundbreaking contribution uncovering the horror of being a person without a nation. Using a multi-media platform including photographs and narratives, readers learn not only about how people become stateless, but also the impact on their lives and the terrible perpetuity of statelessness on generations of families who lives never legally exist.
The iBook could not come at a better time given the growing interest of governments, researchers, and activists in promoting and protecting the human rights of stateless people. More importantly, it arrives at a time when many stateless populations, including Dominicans of Haitian descent, the stateless bidoon in the Gult States, and the Rohingya in Burma, are demanding that their rights be recognized, often at the risk of detention, torture and death. The iBook builds on this momentum by prying open a window into the hidden experiences of stateless people and laying bare the history and politics that support their continued exclusion. For the general reader, In Search of Home is an eye opener that should spur further interest and action. For nations and politicians that continue to marginalize millions of men, women and children, whether affirmatively through state policy or passively through the omission of statelessness in foreign policy discussions, it leaves no room for excuses.
