Description

Casey Coffield has a growing list of personal flaws he keeps locked away in his head:
He’s never on time.
His list of IOUs to his best friend is endless.
Money is always short.
Goals are never in reach.

Oh, and he’s decided to add college drop-out to that list, too. He doesn’t really think that last one’s such a bad thing, but his family insists it is, so it stays on the list.

On paper, he’s a zero. But in person, when he’s mixing tracks for a sea of bodies at the hottest clubs and parties, he’s downright irresistible. Just-right stubble on his chin, body of a boxer and a smirk that stimulates all the right nerves—women have never been a problem. They flock to his swagger and fall for his charm…fast.

All except for this one.

Purple hair, gray eyes, a raspy voice and sass, Murphy Sullivan is a little bit country and a little bit rock-n-roll. And her and Casey? They have history. He can’t remember it, but she wrote a song about him—and it’s not exactly a love song. But it is good. Damn good. And uncovering her inspiration just might be the key to solving a few of his shortcomings—not to mention open doors to his own big break in the music industry.

But sometimes dreams get messy when they collide. Sometimes life changes patterns. A past paints the wrong picture and futures get cloudy. The only question that remains is who will you choose when the dust settles—you? Or the girl of your dreams?

Makes-Your-Heart Happy NA Romance

In Your Dreams by Ginger Scott is a NA romance. It is a standalone spin-off from her beloved Falling Series, and while I highly recommend that series, it is not necessary to read it prior to jumping into In Your Dreams.

Ginger Scott “owns” the YA/NA genre. Her characters epitomize that age group. They are frequently imperfect or insecure, and just like in real life, those flaws seem magnified under the judgmental scrutiny of teenaged peers. Scott balances those imperfections with a core goodness that makes you stick by the side of those characters and root for them until the very end.

In Your Dreams is a dual point-of-view narrative that shines a light on the potential for change and growth between the start of high school and the end of college. I love Scott’s depiction of the embarrassing crushes that turn to sweet friendships, and eventually develop into loving, supportive relationships. I especially loved the heart-stabbing yearbook reminiscing.

Casey Coffield’s got swagger. No money, but plenty of confidence. He’s rather arrogant and cavalier; things usually come easy to him. Even knowing his sad background, I found it difficult to like him through the first half of the book. However, he redeemed himself with his politeness and responsiveness to Murphy. Once you get to know him, you see that he is chill and accepting. He might not be an angel, but he’s working on his long list of flaws.

Murphy Sullivan went to high school with Houston and Casey. She was very quiet, and a wallflower in high school. She’s still working on her confidence. She’s a singer, songwriter at night and elementary school music teacher by day. She oozes talent.

There are plenty of secondary characters you’ll love to love: Houston, Page, Leah and Casey’s roommate Eli. Houston’s and Murphy’s families represent the family Casey wishes he had. They are caring and accepting; they feel more like home than his own. Casey’s family is whole dislikable. They frame him and established the hows and whys of teenage years, and later they give him the opportunity to show what sort of man he has become.

I love how Casey and Murphy reconnect (no spoilers so I can’t tell you how absolutely au courant and cute it is). Due to the nature of their initial relationship, the romance takes a long time to develop; it’s a chaste awkward crush to adoring friendship to sacrificing love.
Casey and Murphy ended up being exactly what the other needs.

“Beautifully broken, but whole together…”

Casey’s sometimes-selfish (but mostly selfless) encouragement helps Murphy recognize her talent and develop some confidence. I think she ends up helping Casey more. He really grew once he found something, someone who inspired him to be selfless.

Ginger Scott has again delivered a beautiful, engaging story that captured my heart. Her writing always takes me out of myself and makes me question my perceptions as well as give her characters a big hug. In Your Dreams has a good beat, and it’s sure to hit the top of the charts.
