Ink and Bone

This book can be downloaded and read in iBooks on your Mac or iOS device.

New York Times bestselling author Lisa Unger “builds a sense of place for The Hollows that rivals Stephen King’s Castle Rock for continuity and creepiness.” —The News & Observer (Raleigh, NC)

“For fans of dark and twisty psychological suspense, Ink and Bone is not to be missed.” —Lisa Scottoline, New York Times bestselling author of Most Wanted

A young woman’s mysterious gift forces her into the middle of a dangerous investigation of a little girl's disappearance.

Twenty-year-old Finley Montgomery is rarely alone. Visited by people whom others can’t see and haunted by prophetic dreams she has never been able to control or understand, Finley is terrified by the things that happen to her. When Finley’s abilities start to become too strong for her to handle—and even the roar of her motorcycle or another dazzling tattoo can’t drown out the voices—she turns to the only person she knows who can help her: her grandmother Eloise Montgomery, a renowned psychic living in The Hollows, New York.

Merri Gleason is a woman at the end of her tether after a ten-month-long search for her missing daughter, Abbey. With almost every hope exhausted, she resorts to hiring Jones Cooper, a detective who sometimes works with psychic Eloise Montgomery. Merri’s not a believer, but she’s just desperate enough to go down that road, praying that she’s not too late. Time, she knows, is running out.

As a harsh white winter moves into The Hollows, Finley and Eloise are drawn into the investigation, which proves to have much more at stake than even the fate of a missing girl. As Finley digs deeper into the town and its endless layers, she is forced to examine the past, even as she tries to look into the future. Only one thing is clear: The Hollows gets what it wants, no matter what.

From Publishers Weekly

Apr 04, 2016 – Psychic college student Finley Montgomery, the engaging heroine of bestseller Unger's uneven fourth Hollows thriller (after 2015's Crazy Love You), has fled her domineering mother and troubled life in Seattle to live with her famed psychic grandmother, Eloise Montgomery, in the Hollows, a small town in upstate New York. PI Jones Cooper, who sometimes does jobs for Eloise, has agreed to look into the disappearance of missing child Abbey Gleason, and when Finley begins receiving communications from a kidnapped girl, her grandmother tells her to take the case. Haunted by her visions and pursued by her ex-boyfriend and tattoo artist Rainer, Finley struggles to find Abbey before the Hollows a powerful place in its own right claims another victim. Philosophical musings slow the pace, and tattooed, tortured Finley ultimately fails to transcend clich . Still, Unger fans should enjoy this tale of troubled families finding redemption in the midst of tragedy.

Customer Reviews

If you like the cover you'll like what lies beneath...

I received a pre-release copy of Ink and Bone in exchange for an honest review. As a long-time fan of Lisa Unger's writing I am familiar with The Hollows and now, The Whispers series so I'm extremely excited and honored to get the opportunity to do so! This is one of my favorite genres to read and I am happy to say I was not let down by Ms. Unger's latest release. Ink and Bone is well-written, characters who seem real enough that I can relate to, empathize with, cheer for, and /or wanted to die a painful death. I love the title and the cover, merged together it is a perfect glimpse into the book itself.

The Hollows isn't just a town, those living in it not just residents, both points made often throughout the book though what that relationship actually is isn't readily answered. I still still find myself thinking about it days after I read the final page.

Ink and Bone is about a mothers desperate search for her daughter kidnapped during a vacation in the Hollows under brutal circumstances. The last chance she has in getting her daughter back is through a retired police officer turned detective (the detective from Lisa Unger's book Fragile also set in the Hollows) who has had success closing cases when all normal procedural methods failed. This success due to his sometime partner who is an elderly physic and lifetime resident of the Hollows experienced in working cases like these but whose time is ending. The Hollows has chosen her granddaughter whose time is just beginning, even though so struggles with her 'gifts', controlling them, what they are, and with fate versus freewill.

The Hollows, it's secrets, it's residents, what is and what isn't real and the never ending whispers through the trees all have a part to play in finding the young girl. Relationships between spouses and families runs as a back story eventually joining together with the main characters in this book. There is a point where you think you know what is happening or will happen, what and who is real but you will learn otherwise. Nowhere else other than The Hollows will a place have a greater impact on the lives of those who reside or visit. Therefore, beware of getting caught up in thinking you know what will happen next based on a belief that only actions by people can determine an outcome. Good and evil, greed and selflessness, past and present, freewill and fate...we all struggle with these but no one more so than those living among the whispering hollows.

Engrossing and vivid through and through!

I need to read more of Lisa Unger's books because she has a beautiful way with words. They flow poetically and with ease. The story got to point and kept at it with no other distractions. It was an intense mystery thriller with some paranormal mixed in.

Finley Montgomery has inherited psychic powers from her grandmother, and while Eloise is the one who assists Jones Cooper on certain cases, it's now Finely’s turn to sit in the driver’s seat and help solve the latest crime in The Hollows.

I’ve been bewitched by the character of Finley. She’s fierce yet quiet, intelligent but wild. She’s not your average heroine, physically nor emotionally. In a way she’s had to grow up on her own. For most of her life, she lacked a mentor to guide her psychic abilities. Her mother constantly told her what she was seeing and hearing wasn’t actually there.

The family of the missing girl had their own chapters detailing their struggles in keeping their family together after the little girls disappearance. While their situation was intriguing all on its own, I much preferred Finley's chapters. She was very colorful and riveting character.

I've only ever read one of the novellas that follows Eloise (grandmother) and I had no trouble following along with this story. Although this universe coincides with Unger’s other books, this can easily be read as a standalone novel.

Unger creates a vivid atmosphere with detailed descriptions of locations, sounds, and people. Featuring a wide range of interesting supporting characters, the content is so engrossing you won't be able to put it down. I called in sick to life and ended up reading it all day. I’m hoping this was a lead in to a series, because the ending left a lot to be desired, and of course, I’d love to see more of Finley.

Ink and Bone an amazing read. It's thrilling, exciting and unstoppable!! Thank you Lisa Unger.
