The study of two-dimensional and axisymmetric sudden enlargements reveals abrupt changes in flow and recompressions that are more or less stable or violent in these systems. Observation of the flows makes it possible to propose a scenario to explain these instabilities. The method of calculation deriving from it confirms, on the whole, the experimental data.
