Customer Reviews

Awful

I normally don't write reviews, but I felt the need to spare others from wasting their time and money. This book was a mess. I hate the fact that I even wasted time skimming to the end because I needed closure.

Good character development

Richard Craven and Madeline are well developed in this story. The novel works well as a psychological profile of a man's inability to realize what love is. Many readers are likely to relate to this theme. His inability to realize the nature of love is consistent in his character even toward the end of the story when we, as readers, are ready for him to make a full commitment to Madeline, Mady. Instead, he tears off to dispose of his previous paramour. This is a bit of a stretch. If he really has experienced a change in his personal evolution, it seems he'd allow Mady's brother, Rufus, his brother, Anthony, to dispose of Sarah. Instead, he is away from Mady for two more days to transport Sarah to one of his ships that is on its way to Boston. This part of the falling action is not convincing. A patient reader is willing to follow the male character's personal revolution. However, another delay in his commitment to the woman who has stood by him had me skipping parts of the ending, and speed reading through it. It seemed to suggest that Mady allowed herself to be overlooked. Another needed development was the lack of action in the part of Mady's female friends. I would like to see them rescue her or for her to find a clever way to rescue herself. Nonetheless, the writing is brilliant and the interior dialogue is deftly unfolded for the reader. As always, Evans delivers the goods! Brava! DM Taylor
