"iPad and iPhone App Development" is the official companion text for the popular iTunes U series from Stanford University taught by Paul Hegarty in Fall 2011.
The examples in this book have been completely updated so you can follow along with the latest release of Xcode and take advantage of the latest features of Objective-C.
Experienced programmers will learn to write applications for the iPad and iPhone. The book is full of code examples and animated walkthroughs.
You can follow the description in the book to build the sample applications for iOS 6 or you can still target iOS 5 as in the video series.
The book begins with introductions to Objective-C, the Xcode IDE, the Cocoa frameworks, and the Model View Controller pattern. The middle portion of the book focuses on views and view controllers that you will use in almost every iOS app. The book ends with special topics such as Blocks, Location and Maps, Core Data, and iCloud.
What's New in Version 1.2
There is a new edition of this book named "Developing iOS 7 Apps for iPad and iPhone." This book has been updated to point to the new edition.
This book is an accompaniment to a Stanford University computer science course. Reading this book and listening to the lectures is hands-down the most comprehensive way to learn how to develop ios applications. There are links to the iTunesU course in the first chapter.
The author, Daniel Steinberg, and Paul Hegarty did an outstanding job putting this together.
And it is completely free.

What a great book.
I'm electrical engineer, and i'm taking my master in Medizintechnik, but in my free time, I always want o learn things that we help me to grow up my knowledge. I started with CS106a because I will like to know about Java, the course was excelent, and now I'm trying to learn how to develop applications for iphones or ipads, and I subscribe to the Stanford itunes course. The professor is excelent, but there is some moments to fast for me, but with the book, I can read with calm all the theory and understand very well the material. The Book, is great, is so interactive, is not boring, i can't stop reading. Really, really great JOB!! And Tks.. Stanford for let us share your professors and material... Thats a great contribution to our world!!!
