With this distinguished standalone Regency, McLean (To Trust a Thief) explores the fraught arranged marriage between a scientifically minded duke and an erstwhile wallflower. When bookish, antisocial Alex Reddington unexpectedly steps into his brother's shoes as Duke of Beaubrooke, he also inherits a marriage contract with the Wynnburn family and must choose which of their three daughters to wed. Alex proposes to the shy, overlooked, and somewhat socially awkward middle daughter, Lavinia, hoping he's found a wife who will leave him to his studies and won't force him to participate in society. Lavinia, meanwhile, is overjoyed that someone finally noticed her and sets about to become the perfect duchess—which of course includes hosting and attending parties. Though Lavinia schedules the events around Alex's research, their fundamental miscommunication leads to frustration and hurt on both sides, even as real feelings develop between them. Propelled forward by both a host of misunderstandings and some passionate interludes, the fast-moving plot offers plenty of enjoyment. Readers will especially cheer for Lavinia as she comes into her own and embraces love.

Alex and Lavinia
Alexander Reddington, Duke of Beaubrooke needs to marry and produce an heir in order to keep the title he unexpectedly inherited in his family. Fortunately, thanks to his father, he need only choose one of the Wynnburn sisters. Alex met Lavinia earlier, but was unaware of who she was. Alex is a scholar and is somewhat obsessed with his research in botany. Not as outgoing as her sisters, Lavinia would rather sit in the corner and watch and read. Seeing they have much in common, Alex asks her to marry him. Although she can’t believe he chose her, she accepts. This is an enjoyable lighthearted romance with just a bit of angst. Alex and Lavinia are a good match. They do have a lot in common and the chemistry between them is great. There are a few bumps in the road, misunderstanding, irritation, unwarranted suspicion. Will they learn from their missteps and get their happy ending? They are both very intelligent people, so they should be able to figure it out.

Enjoyable
I totally enjoyed everything about this book. This is a new found author for me and I can’t wait to read more of her stories.
