Jaclyn and the Beanstalk

This book can be downloaded and read in Apple Books on your Mac or iOS device.

What fate awaits a girl who hears monsters at night …

Sixteen-year-old Jaclyn looks up to her father. An honest man who once fought for the king, he now teaches Jaclyn how to use her wits—and her sword. But he has a secret. And his secret may have a connection to the one thing Jaclyn is hiding from him.

Upon hearing "monsters" are terrorizing the small villages around Black Mountain, Jaclyn's father and his friends head out to hunt them … but they don't return. Armed only with her sword and three magic beans—a gift from a mysterious old woman—Jaclyn sets out for Black Mountain to save her father.

On her climb, one bean drops and grows into a beanstalk, catching her when she falls.

She isn't the only one that takes the ride. Jack, her childhood friend and secret crush, is following her.

Together, Jaclyn and Jack must battle to save not only their fathers, but the townspeople the beasts plan to lay waste to before it's too late.

A captivating re-telling of a classic!

I received a free copy of this book and opted to post a review.

Jaclyn and the Beanstalk is a captivating and unique interpretation of Jack and the Beanstalk and its origins!

I loved Jaclyn and her family, they had depth and interest, and Jaclyn's history was intriguing. I have a soft spot for young, strong heroines; especially those who have families that support them. Ting also has a flair for adding religious undertones to the plot and making them relevant, without coming across as preachy. As a person who is more spiritual than religious, I appreciate this about her. Beyond the fact that it is a lesson in forgiveness, it is also a lesson in empowering our daughters, sisters, and nieces to discard society's gender norms and embrace who they are.

It really is such a lovely, light read. I was riveted by the story from the first page and finished it in a few hours. I definitely recommend this to fairytale lovers as it is a wonderfully light read and a different take on a classic.
