Description

Blood will have blood.

“Red” Hett was an airman at Pearl Harbor when the Japanese attacked in 1941. Four years later, he flew in the Enola Gay when it dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima.

War criminal Genjo Tokuda was wounded and captured on Okinawa as kamikaze planes crashed into American ships. He was a prisoner of war when the Hiroshima bombing incinerated his entire family and their ancestral home.

Now, Tokuda reigns supreme as the ruthless gangster boss of Tokyo’s yakuza. What better opportunity for him to satisfy the bushido oath of revenge he swore at the ruins of his ancestors’ Hiroshima shrine than a blazing kamikaze attack on the Pacific War Vets Convention in Vancouver, where “Red” Hett will be a guest of honor?

But first, the gangster wants the airman to feel his pain. So that’s why two sadistic hitmen – the Claw and the Sushi Chef – will snatch and carve apart “Red” Hett’s granddaughter, Corporal Jackie Hett of Special X.

Special X: the West Coast psycho-hunters of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

"Slade knows psychos inside out." - Toronto Star

"KAMIKAZE interweaves the atrocities and conspiracies of the past with fast-paced contemporary action. The storytelling is crisp and compelling as it seamlessly shifts between past and present, with enough twists to satisfy even the most ardent Slade fan. An intense cat-and-mouse game plays out on the streets and in the skies. With its strong emotional resonance, KAMIKAZE is a passionate indictment of the lies of wartime. It's easily capable of keeping a reader up into the wee hours." - The Vancouver Sun

"KAMIKAZE is a deeply cynical piece of work. Slade pairs a string of murders in present-day Vancouver with historical events in the larger world. It's a given that the story lines will converge by the novel's end. Slade is all about procedure, feeding our endless appetite for the inner workings of the police. But the novel's enormous research and central thesis make it something else. President Harry Truman's sanguine acceptance of bloodshed here is chilling, and war itself comes off as the most murderous of serial killers." - The Georgia Straight

"Canada's Master of the Macabre. KAMIKAZE zips along at the usual Slade pace, and rings chillingly true and grotesquely familiar with its repercussions of fact-based historical conspiracies in our world today. Art imitating life, or is it the other way around? Either way, it's a virtuoso breakout by Slade." - Jack Whyte, author of the CAMULOD, TEMPLAR, and GUARDIANS series

"No Slade novel would be complete without a psychopath or two. But Slade's not satisfied to merely present an intriguing whodunit that will have mystery lovers scratching their heads and sorting through enough red herrings to stock a fish hatchery. In KAMIKAZE, he postulates hidden motivation for the bombing of Hiroshima that doesn't appear in most history books. KAMIKAZE weaves together historical strands, contemporary killers, and the feats of Special X in a gripping, tense, and exciting climax." - Hellnotes

About the Author:
