Killer in the Pool

This book can be downloaded and read in Apple Books on your Mac or iOS device.

On February 24, 2010, Tilikum, the largest killer whale at SeaWorld, suddenly dragged Dawn Brancheau, his trainer, into the pool and killed her. Journalist Tim Zimmermann set out to find out why. His riveting account of Tilikum's life and the history of killer whale entertainment at marine parks dives into the world of the ocean's top predator. It chronicles Tilikum's capture and separation from his family and the physical and psychological stress he experienced in marine park pools over some thirty years. It explores Tilikum's involvement in two previous deaths. And it details the inherent risks of using captive killer whales for human entertainment. Ultimately, Zimmermann explains how the life of Tilikum came to mean the death of Dawn Brancheau.

Customer Reviews

If you remember the sad story of this event, this quick read adds a lot of behind the scenes information.

Powerful stuff.

I read the original article on Outside's website after viewing the film Blackfish and turning to the internet hungry for more information on this issue. It's heartbreaking but a must read for anyone concerned about corporate malfeasance, let alone environmental issues.

Killer in the Pool

Good book with lots of facts about the sad reality of Sea Worlds multi-million dollar industry. Keeping these poor whales in captivity, proves not only harmful to the animal, but fatal to those forced to put on a good show. Truly sickening! Sea World should not be allowed to take such a precious token of the sea, simply to use as a circus act.
