Description

A modern girl’s guide to seducing Mr. Darcy

When Ella Briley asked her lucky-in-love friends to set her up for an office party, she was expecting a blind date. Instead, she’s pulled through a magic mirror and into the past…straight into the arms of her very own Mr. Darcy.

Patrick Meadowfair, earl of Fairhaven, is too noble for his own good. To save a female friend from what is sure to be a loveless marriage, he’s agreed to whisk her off to wed the man she truly wants. But all goes awry when Patrick mistakes Ella for the would-be bride and kidnaps her instead.

Centuries away from everything she knows, Ella’s finally found a man who heats her blood and leaves her breathless. Too bad he’s such a perfect gentleman. Yet the reluctant rake may just find this modern girl far too tempting for even the noblest of men to resist…

The struggle is real people:! Ella and Patrick are meant to be together

The first in this time-travel contemporary / historical romance series that I have read, and with only a few little questions, it read beautifully as a stand-alone story. Kiss the Earl mixes a contemporary woman into a late regency era story, and does this with several twists that make the story sing.

Ella is a comic book author, and in the midst of a crisis: a launch party to celebrate her release has her in need of a date, something very hard to come by. Ella is smart, funny, brave and incredibly resourceful, with a core of strength and stubbornness that never quite dances over the line into annoying. Being suddenly thrust into a foreign place and time has to be unsettling, but she doesn’t drop into damsel in distress mode, she simply does what she knows or believes is best. Having a character so firmly grounded in her own self and personality is refreshing and unique, particularly for those of the regency era that she encounters.

Patrick, Earl of Meadowfair is an honorable man, perhaps too much so. Even with his unfamiliarity with the sort of attitude that Ella presents, he’s one of those good guys. His childhood friend Amelia is due to be wed to a man she does not love. She fears a loveless marriage of duty and Patrick, underneath it all, completely understands just how horrible that would be for his friend. In a plan that is both clever and dangerous, he agrees to help her stage a kidnapping so she can connect with her true love.

And then Ella happens. Oh the introduction and confusion was delicious! Gina Lamm mixes the honor and curiosity of Patrick with the very modern Ella, and we are watching the two get to know one another, and discover an attraction for the ages. One that can’t possibly be enacted upon since they are from different times, and well, Patrick’s loyalty to Amelia is truly one of his first concerns. And that is what makes Patrick so uniquely qualified and attractive: he is committed to his promises and loyalties to friends – his word I his bond and he will even risk his own happiness to do what he feels I right.

The struggle is real people: poor Ella and Patrick are, without debate, meant to be together. Yet there is no easy way out of this mess to give them what they deserve or desire. Until the author’s incredibly clever twists that make the impossible possible. Oh I did not see that one coming at all, and it added yet another clever twist into a story that was layered with them, combining in unique ways that had me questioning, smiling and wondering what would come next.

With only the barest of explanations to introduce Mrs. Knightsbridge and the time-travel, those very difficult to digest elements seemed to be second nature to Ella: I would have liked just a touch more about that. I can only expect that as the third of the series, that information was presented in earlier books: a question that I hope to resolve soon as I have bought the earlier books in the series.

I received an eArc copy of the title from the publisher via NetGalley for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.
