Kris Longknife: Unrelenting
Book 13, Kris Longknife
This book can be downloaded and read in iBooks on your Mac or iOS device.
In the New York Times bestselling Kris Longknife novels, “fans of the Honor Harrington escapades will welcome the adventures of another strong female in outer space starring in a thrill-a-page military space opera” (Alternative Worlds).
The aliens attacking the planetary system of Alwa are an enemy unlike any Admiral Kris Longknife has ever encountered before. She doesn’t know who they are, only that they worship a being known as the Enlightened One and are unafraid to sacrifice themselves against her fleet.
But Kris faces more than just the fanatical behavior of an alien armada. A saboteur has infiltrated the military’s medical facility and unleashed an epidemic that has spread throughout the fleet without warning.
Seventy-two career military women are down with something not even the aliens could do to them—including Admiral Kris Longknife…
The series lost tension with this book
This book advances the plot, but blasts through the pace so fast, that it loses a lot of the original charm of the characters and the setting.
Kris Longknife is an admiral, and manages to blast through just over nine months in a rather short number of pages. While she attacks the titular enemy in workman like fashion, she winds up making effectively no mistakes in her approach, her guesses are almost flawless, her military planning (under all sorts of different stress) is exemplary, with fallbacks that work, and a casualty rate that is unbelievably low for the foe she is stated to be facing.
The sense of struggle does show up when she has to rejigger her plans with the civilians, which harks back to previous themes, but her rate of growth in overcoming this is phenomenal. If you have been following the back story and prequels to the series, it makes more sense, and has been foreshadowed. That does not change the fact that it feels like a Civilization game on easy mode.
But the tension has simply leaked out of this protagonist. It feels a bit phoned in, and given what the author is doing to reset the main character's setting, I think he knows he needs to change things back up.
I will still be preordering the next book of the series, but I think his spin off series are doing better.
