Lady Midnight

Book 1, The Dark Artifices

This book can be downloaded and read in iBooks on your Mac or iOS device.

Description

The Shadowhunters of Los Angeles star in this #1 New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling novel in Cassandra Clare’s newest series, The Dark Artifices, a sequel to the internationally bestselling Mortal Instruments series. Lady Midnight is a Shadowhunters novel.

It’s been five years since the events of City of Heavenly Fire that brought the Shadowhunters to the brink of oblivion. Emma Carstairs is no longer a child in mourning, but a young woman bent on discovering who killed her parents and avenging her losses.

Together with her battle partner Julian Blackthorn, Emma must learn to trust her head and her heart as she investigates a demonic plot that stretches across Los Angeles, from the Sunset Strip to the enchanted sea that pounds the beaches of Santa Monica. If only her heart didn’t lead her in treacherous directions…

Making things even more complicated, Julian’s brother Mark—who was captured by the faeries five years ago—has been returned as a bargaining chip. The faeries are desperate to find out who is murdering their kind—and they need the Shadowhunters’ help to do it. But time works differently in faerie, so Mark has barely aged and doesn’t recognize his family. Can he ever truly return to them? Will the faeries really allow it?

Glitz, glamours, and Shadowhunters abound in this heartrending opening to Cassandra Clare’s Dark Artifices series.

From Publishers Weekly

Feb 15, 2016 – Clare returns to her Shadowhunters world with this enjoyable if drawn-out tale. Set in contemporary Los Angeles, it centers on Emma Carstairs, a Shadowhunter adopted by members of the Blackthorn family who, like her, were orphaned in the Dark War five years earlier. Emma has become parabatai or sworn companion to Julian, the oldest Blackthorn boy living at the local Institute, where Shadowhunters live and train. When humans and faeries start turning up dead, covered in mysterious runes like those found on the bodies of Emma's parents, she and Julian investigate, accompanied by Julian's disoriented older brother Mark, recently returned after having been stolen by the faeries years before. Having been gradually revealed in nine previous novels, the Shadowhunter universe is complex, jargon-rich, and a bit unwieldy, but Clare's well-developed protagonists (each a fragile combination of heroic warrior and teenage neurotic), pell-mell action sequences, complicated family dynamics, and fascinating magic system continue to engage. This first volume in the Dark Artifices trilogy should easily please Clare's existing fans, but newcomers will want to begin with the Mortal Instruments. Ages 14 up.

Fight the urge

I'm trying so hard not to buy this right now because if I did it would be like lighting temptation in my face and running away. A lot of people are annoyed at Cassie because she keeps writing books about shadowhunters but if they had put in that much effort into a world they would keep writing in it too, so shut up. I loved Clary's story and Tessa's, now I'm excited for Emma's. I'm hoping that, since this is years later, Jace and Clary are married or getting married and Izzy and Simon too. Although I known it won't focus on the TMI characters since this is Emma's story and all but I'm hoping for some adorable CLACE, SIZZY and MALEC. Cassie is extremely talented so I have no doubt she can pull it off.

Yah

I'm am so trying not to buy this book and I can't wait either I am also excited for the show to

Anticipation

I cannot wait for this book to be released. The characters of Emma and Jem and all the other Shadowhunters of the Los Angeles institute are already very well developed, and Clare's other books had me up all night-they still do! I think we can expect great things from Cassandra Clare. -Morgan Lanzo
