You’ll find more than 150 audio and video excerps, this ebook offers an interactive way to get to know the voice, the personality, and the teaching of Lotte Lehmann (1888-1976), one of the greatest singers of the 20th century. Her amazing breadth of activity is covered: her arias, her Lieder, her artwork, her reading, her writing, and her poetry. There’s a short bio and a complete Winterreise that allows you to see her drawing for each song, hear her read the poetry of each song, and hear her sing each song. There’s a whole chapter on her teaching: her master classes in video and audio formats as well as audios of many of her students. You can hear how Lehmann compared to her contemporaries in the Comparisons chapter. Early Recordings allows you to find out how recordings were made, even before microphones. And you’ll find exclusive photos, and seven audio tracks not heard since she sang them.

New Lehmann students have been added as well as new audio
Gary Hickling’s Lotte Lehmann & Her Legacy is much more than a book–I speak of it as a Lotte Lehmann Experience–and a remarkable experience at that! I have found myself going back again and again to savor things that I missed on the earlier visits. Through the Lotte Lehmann Experience, Lehmann truly comes alive. Hickling’s prose is excellent and literate–and he knew his subject personally.
In addition to words, there are many examples of Lehmann’s glorious singing, videos carefully selected from her master classes, and magnificent photographs–many of which you will never have seen before.
I found particularly interesting the comparison of Lehmann to other fine singers singing the same Lied or aria, and of Hickling’s analysis of some of the favorite Lehmann recordings.
For the record collectors among us, there is an exhaustive discography–both commercial and live recordings that will bring you back for additional study on many occasions.
And how could I not mention the inclusion of a telephone interview that Hickling did with Lehmann for her 85th birthday celebration. A very complete bibliography will point toward the best of the Lehmann biographies and articles–not to mention her own literary efforts.
Hickling has used technology in a remarkable way. You will also be pleased, as I am, with the quality of the audio transcriptions. Bravo Lotte Lehmann! Bravo Gary Hickling! Truly a remarkable experience… real magic! More Lehmann, please. Bill Parks
Thank you, Mr. Hinckling, for making this glorious tribute to Lotte Lehmann free to the public.
