NAMED ONE OF THE MUST-READ ROMANCES OF THE YEAR BY USA TODAY • Violetta Rand’s explosive Lies & Leather series kicks off with a red-hot motorcycle racer who rides hard and plays for keeps.
Twenty-one-year-old Karlie Augustine is a survivor. She’s smart and tough, but she’s in too deep with a bad boyfriend who isn’t above breaking her spirit—or her body. Luckily, help arrives in the form of a leather-clad, motorcycle-riding hunk on the right side of the law. Lucas Lafontaine is pure muscle, a Corpus Christi cop who ignites something primal deep within Karlie. And when he offers her room and board in exchange for housekeeping, she finally starts to feel safe again.
As their arrangement turns deliciously decadent, Lucas gets hooked on Karlie’s killer body and fighting spirit. He wants to heal the pain he sees behind her eyes, but to protect her he needs to keep her close, especially now that her psycho ex won’t take a hint. Even as Lucas fights his own battle for custody of his young son, he knows that what he’s found with Karlie is real—and that he’d do anything to protect the woman he wants to take to the finish line.

An easy introduction to a new series, I just wanted to feel more heart.
I enjoy the damsel in distress trope on occasion, especially if the characters come to grow and let go of some of their past issues as they work toward a new normal. And I had high hopes for Karlie, in seeing that her childhood in foster care left her feeling less than lovable, which led to a longer than is logical relationship with a man who used her low self-esteem to further bully her into staying. Getting up the courage to move on, especially when every fibre of your being is second-guessing your worth is a monumental task, and that alone is admirable.
Lucas is a police officer, not content with upholding the law, he’s also got a serious case of protect and rescue when it comes to the obviously distressed, and Karlie ticks off every box. I liked Lucas, even as he occasionally felt overbearing and overly interested in fixing Karlie’s life, as his own wasn’t smooth, as he was in the midst of a custody battle.
Exes galore kicking up a fuss, and some serious danger (not just distraction) from Karlie’s ex throws the two together. Sparks fly. Did I think that they were ‘meant to be”, I’m not entirely sure. There was chemistry, but from Karlie’s POV I thought her emotions were more tied to his being ‘nice’ and honest with her. For Lucas, the appearance of his ex’s photo, and the fact that it wasn’t put away / thrown out (even with the child in the mix) kept me thinking (and occasionally humming) it was a Love the One You’re With moment. Their interactions felt real, the steam was there, I just didn’t find all the heart that was spoken of reaching out and grabbing me.
Overall, with a twist at the end that was completely unexpected, the story was light and easy, lower in angst than many. An easy introduction to a new series, I just wanted to feel more heart.
