They were average kids looking for something to do.

Today they started killing people.

A modern-day Bonnie and Clyde are on the run through rural Minnesota—victim by victim they’re having the time of their lives. But when Bureau of Criminal Apprehension investigator Virgil Flowers joins the hunt for the thrill-hungry kids, things take a shocking detour.

Publishers Weekly Review

Aug 27, 2012 – In this high-octane thrill ride, bestseller Sandford’s fifth novel featuring Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension agent Virgil Flowers (after 2011’s Shock Wave), Lucas Davenport, Virgil’s boss (and star of his own series), dispatches Virgil to a remote corner of the state to deal with “a bad one.” Four people are dead: a married couple in Shinder, another two in nearby Bigham. The gang responsible—armed and dangerous teens Jimmy Sharp, Tom McCall, and Becky Welsh—have already murdered one woman during a robbery, and Virgil soon suspects them in these other crimes. Fearful that the killing spree hasn’t run its course, Virgil pulls out all the stops to get inside the minds of his quarry while he sorts through all the possible motives for the spate of deaths. Virgil’s penchant for wisecracking, which in less skilled hands could have been annoying, serves to deflate the tension, and his backstory is simple enough to allow new readers to easily keep up.

One of Stanford's Best

While any new book by John Stanford can insure a pleasant evening of reading -- at least I always seem to stay up layer than planned to finish the newest one -- this one is truly exceptional. All of the characters are well drawn and developed, and the plot weaves and twists. Too often series books develop a sense of sameness that although comfortable leads to a little boredom upon finishing the latest saga.

Mad River has familiar characters but avoids that sameness. Even the conclusion of the book is unusual in its moral ambiguity.

What a great read. Edge of your seat plot and Virgil Flowers. What's not to love?

Right combo

Just the right combination of police procedures, moral conundrums, character development, and hotel room sex. Sandford's knack of naturally interjecting funny scenes into the flow of the book always make me laugh. Like a 6'7" biker being the first person in Flowers' life to ever use the word defenestration in a complete sentence. I had to look it up!
