Inspiring and creative
Irene Smith has always been a courageous, creative explorer. She offered bodywork to people with AIDS before AIDS was understood at all; she was an early practitioner of hospice massage. Now she's out there on the leading edge of publishing with an interactive iBook. You need an iPad or a Mac computer to read, listen, and view Massage in Hospice Care: An Everflowing Approach. This book is filled with multi-media inspiration and instruction.
The importance of touch in hospice care
This is a wonderful resource for anyone working in hospice care, whether they are a massage therapist, nurse, aide, doctor, caregiver, or family/friend. It is much more than a “how to” massage technique book, although there are wonderful suggestions and directions regarding massage and gentle touch with people who are extremely frail and vulnerable.
Irene Smith explains the “what and why” of hospice care with compassion and wisdom. Her 30+ years of hospice experience are evident in the depth of care she advocates for her patients, while the case histories she’s included tell much about her approach to this work.
This book invites readers to explore their own feelings about working with the dying, accepting what is when we would really like to change what is, and listening with an open heart.
A must read
A must read for anyone interested in hospice massage. Irene shares her lifelong experiences and teachings in hospice care in a clear and concise manner. If you are thinking of starting a hospice massage practice or becoming a volunteer in hospice massage, this book will provide you with the necessary tools to be a successful provider. I was a volunteer hospice massage therapist at Laguna Honda hospital, Vitas and Kaiser hospice. I have taken all of Irene's classes in San Francisco; everything I learned from her is in this wonderful book. Irene Smith is unique in our world, very few people have the skill, knowledge and experience to teach others how to do this very special work. How fortunate we are to have her and this special book.
