Description

Mavericks Server is Apple's latest evolution of OS X Server.  OS X Server is a collection of core networking services, collaboration tools, and groupware products.  While OS X Server has lost a number of services over the years, it remains a Swiss Army Knife, allowing a creative system administrator to achieve nearly anything imaginable.

Mavericks Server: Foundation Services walks system administrators through the proper setup of OS X Server.  This book is based on a decade of experience with OS X Server in numerous environments.  Its examples are based on real world deployments.  Foundation Services focused on the core services required by all computer networks.  This includes DNS, DHCP, Directory Services, SSL Certificates, and RADIUS authentication.  In addition, Apple has introduced a new foundation service, Caching Server.  Within a few months, we will all wonder, "how did we ever get along without this."

Foundation Services covers integration with Active Directory as well as deploying Open Directory as a stand alone directory system.  The examples are realistic representations of real-world deployments.  The book also provides valuable advice to administrators considering upgrading older versions of OS X Server.

The book also embraces a new method of publication.  Through Apple's iBooks distribution, this book will evolve as Apple updates OS X Server.  Buyers of the book can expect a consistent stream of updates throughout the life of Mavericks Server.  The goal of the book, and series, is to release a new version to match each version of Mavericks and Server.app.  This is an evolving book, staying current as the subject matter evolves.

Author Reid Bundonis is a seasoned Apple field consultant.  Possessing the now extinct Apple Systems Administrator certification as well as Xsan certified, Reid is the architect of some incredible deployments of Apple products.  Remaining active in the field, Reid is currently splitting his time between a charter school, a fire department, and a Fortune 100 retailer.

OS X Server is an amazingly powerful product.  This book will help administrators set a proper foundation to craft truly amazing solutions.

What's New in Version 1.6

Updated for Mavericks 10.9.5 and Server.app 3.2.1. Minor corrections and adjustments. Apple is setting the stage for iOS 8 and Yosemite with this release. But the beauty is that you can support them now. No need to rush to upgrade when Yosemite is released. As always, see the Change Log for complete details.

First Rate Admin Guide

I have been a small business Mac server admin for many years and been certified in most versions of Mac Server. That said, I am always looking for new and up to date references for server that help me fill out my understanding of Mac server since Apple’s documentation is spotty. Most references are often poorly written behemoths costing many times this book. Granted it is only a limited book, but the author clearly states int the title that this is foundation services and the documentation is extremely well written, clear and accurate. He has added to and updated my understanding of many aspects of the Mac server and done it with humor and great tone. I also like that he spoke of current best practices from real world experience. This is commonly missing from other technical book

I appreciated that the iBook format was different than standard text formats, but I valued the illustrations that allowed me to focusing on the text.

To clarify one review, there is a table of contents.

My one regret is that the other three books are not available yet, but I will certainly add them to this as soon as they are available

Excellent Book on Mavericks Server

I have used Mac OS X Server for over a year now, and despite Apple’s reputation of making products that don’t require any instructions, this is certainly NOT the case with Mavericks Server. I am not a server novice, and used Windows Home Server for several years previous. Surprisingly, the Microsoft product is so much easier than this Apple Server, and actually had many less but.

Unfortunatly the Microsoft servers are gone now, so Maverick Server is really the only commercial server software still available. And unfortunately, Apple doesn’t feel that extensive documentation is needed.

The Apple documentation that does exist, and other books on OS X Server are the same and very basic. I’ve read several of them and they basically say nothing you couldn’t figure out yourself.

This book is completely different. It is focused on using OS X Server in a larger enterprise environment, but even if it all the text doesn’t apply to my home server environment, I learn something new on just about every page. Mr. Bundonis has years of experience working with OS X Server in very large environments and it shows.

As for negatives, there are a few. First, this book leans pretty heavily to the enterprise environment, and often concerns or configurations for small business or home users aren't mentioned. Second, only one of four books of this series is available, and there is no guarentee the others will ever appear, and this book only covers a few topics and stops. Third, this book isn’t as comprehensive as it could be because writting such a book would be just be too huge to be profitable.

Still, this book is definitly worth the cost, especially if you’ve also read other books on the subject and you want more. I’m not sure if I’d want this to be my only reference book on Server, but its an excellent addition to other OS X Server books that are all similar to each other.

In short, this book is a must-have for anyone setting up Mavericks Server using any configuration, with maybe the possible exception of those that are very basic. In fact, many tips in this book could help those managing servers other than Maverick Server. Overall this probably is the best server book I have ever read. I only wish there was more of it. Apple you need to hire this guy to help write your documentation!!

The author keeps on giving!

Another update for an already great book. The author continues to keep this book up to date with every maintenance release and also adds new content.

I will gladly purchase any new books from this author due to his continued dedication to this book during the Mavericks lifespan.
