Description

One Lonely Widower…
Rohn Lerner is a successful Oklahoma rancher. He’s old enough to know what he likes, and still young enough to enjoy it. But losing his wife five years ago wore him thin. He’s not ready to date, but he needs someone to share a meal with as badly as someone to warm his bed.

One Woman with a Secret…
Bonnie Martin fled her Oklahoma home years ago, leaving behind her abusive father, and Rohn, the lost love she never forgot. Now she’s back to settle her father’s estate, but she has no idea that she’s about to bump into Rohn or that they’ll fall for each other all over again.

One Night That Changes Everything…

“The Oklahoma Nights series is a must read.”

From Publishers Weekly

Oct 12, 2015 – Johnson expertly tugs at the heartstrings with the second Midnight Cowboys contemporary (after Midnight Ride), a touching story of a lonely widower and the high school love he never forgot. It’s been five years since Rohn Lerner’s beloved wife died, and his ranch hands are trying to convince him to get back in the dating game—but he’s trying to avoid it. That is, until his high-school sweetheart unexpectedly arrives back in town. Twenty-five years have passed since Bonnie Martin left Oklahoma for Arizona, escaping her abusive father and leaving behind her first love. When she comes back to Oklahoma to settle her late father’s estate, she falls for the handsome cowboy all over again. But will Rohn ever forgive her when he finds out about a bombshell from the past that could irrevocably change their relationship? Johnson, who toggles through decades to give engaging backstory, sensitively paints a sweet and sizzling contemporary romance that will have widespread appeal, particularly among those who, like the protagonists, are over 40.

An older hero and heroine prove that sparks can fly at any age!

Midnight Wrangler is the second in the Midnight Cowboys series but it can be read as a standalone; I liked this book a lot more than the first one. We were introduced to the hero, Rohn, in the first book but you won’t be missing anything important if you start with this one.

Rohn’s wife died 5 years ago and lately he has been feeling lonely. His young ranch hands have been trying to convince him that he should get back in the ball game and begin dating.

Bonnie and Rohn knew each other in high school and had one wonderful summer together before she left town. Her father’s death brings her back to the town where she grew up and where Ron still lives. They haven’t seen each other in 25 years.

I loved how this book told the story alternating between present day and 1990 and also alternating between Rohn and Bonnie yet not being told in first person. In short bits and pieces we learn why Bonnie left town (and Rohn) abruptly and other details of their summer together. While it was pretty easy to guess the reason there was just enough suspense to the story to keep me from being certain about it.

Bonnie was Rohn’s first love. He loved his wife very much but she’s been gone 5 years and he’s finally ready to move on. Seeing Bonnie again has reawakened the feelings he had for her years ago. Bonnie is having trouble facing what she did to Rohn and doesn’t feel like she has the right to a second chance with him.

Second chance stories are one of my favorites. Throw in the fact that Bonnie and Rohn are in their 40’s and that’s just a bonus for me. Cat Johnson’s writing style in this book is captivating; once I started reading it I couldn’t put it down until I was done. I can’t wait to read the next story in this series!

I received an ARC of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
