This book seriously reignited my love for reading. This is a story that stays with you for a long long time !
Compelling story, unbelievable dialogue
As much as I enjoyed the plot, the writing itself is no better than good YA fiction, which generally vacillates between erring on the side of too much flourish in an effort to impress or being inanely elementary. What I struggle with most is that although Scott, Nora, and Hopper have distinct voices that fit their respective characters as the author describes them, ancillary characters all have one voice. The author's. Frankly, the voice doesn't always fit character, and therefore the book lacks authenticity. I don't believe the characters so I don't believe the book. Are we truly to think blue collar or lesser educated people speak in formal prose? The eloquent language she gives lesser characters isn't in the ordinary conversational vocabulary of even moderately educated people, and yet I'm supposed to believe the words came from a security guard or an apple farmer? The author either gives too much credit to her characters or too little credit to her readers. Maybe NPR was impressed. I wasn't.
