USA Today bestselling author Laura Lee Guhrke is back with the latest in her dazzling An American Heiress in London series, in which a reformed rogue finds all his honorable resolutions tested by the only woman who ever broke his heart . . .
After spending his youth as one of the wildest rakes in the ton, Lord Denys Somerton has devoted the past six years to putting his past behind him. He is determined to fulfill his duties, find a suitable wife, and start a family, but that plan changes when Lola Valentine—the red-haired temptress from his past—returns to London, sparking the same irresistible desires that almost ruined his life once before.
Lola is a woman with no romantic illusions. She knew love would never be enough for a British lord and an American girl from the wrong side of the tracks. For Denys’s sake, she walked away from him and the glittering life he offered. But when an unexpected inheritance brings her back to London, Lola discovers the passion between them is as hot as ever. Can they vanquish it, or will it burn out of control again and destroy them both?
A wonderful installment in the series, sure to please fans of Guhrke’s writing, and stands alone
Having read the first two in this series, I was excited to get back to the American women and their chances at love in London. Lola is an American from the wrong side of the tracks, and while years ago she met, fell in love with and left Denys she’s now back in the city with skills and a theatre to manage.
Denys never paid much attention to his parent’s wishes for his marriage, but when Lola pushed him aside and ran from him, he never quite reconciled himself to the loss. Now with the title firmly in hand, Denys can make the decisions for the theatre that he always wanted to without his father’s input.
But Lola, having inherited half a theatre from her best friend and protector Henry, she’s anxious to take the reins and make her mark. Never did she expect to see Denys again, to remember the feelings they shared and how cruelly she pushed him off to a better life with an appropriate woman.
There is a need to suspend disbelief here, as some of the choices these characters make completely fly against convention and societal norms. Guess what? The story is still fun and enjoyable, as it is the characters and their development as they work to overcome conflicts first with the theatre’s direction and later with their relationship. Lola is more grounded and logical, perhaps because of her upbringing and experiences than Denys, and while he does avail himself of his title and he can be thoughtless because of it, being with Lola makes him a much better man, and a happier one too.
A wonderful installment in the series, sure to please fans of Guhrke’s writing, and stands alone as it is the nebulous connection of American that ties these stories together.
