Patrick's Story: Brothers of Darkness
Amaranthine - Amaranthine, no. 0
This book can be downloaded and read in Apple Books on your Mac or iOS device.
“Not a love story…a dark spiral into blackness.”
“If you’ve read Shades of Gray, you know how this has to end.”
The prequel to Shades of Gray tells the story of Patrick and Michael, how they got tangled into Claudius’ web, and their valiant fight to escape.
When Patrick’s missing brother Michael returns, he brings with him a world of darkness. Turned into a vampire against his will, Michael is the coven’s whipping boy. When Patrick tries to help, he’s claimed as a slave who spends his weekends preparing victims, scooping ashes, and falling prey to the vampire’s twisted desires.
There’s only so much hell he can take, and when vampires from a warring coven offer sanctuary in exchange for cooperation, Patrick quickly agrees. What he expected to be a few months drags out into a long smear of nightmares, and though he fights for hope and freedom, the cost of victory may be more than he bargained for.
A perfectly beautiful train wreck you won't regret!
“Not a love story…a dark spiral into blackness.” is a very apt description of the latest book from Joleene Naylor’s Amaranthine Series. This is the prequel to Shades of Gray, so if you’ve read any of the series, you know how this book ends — maybe (no spoilers here!). Told from Patrick’s perspective, Naylor spins a tale of all-consuming darkness and despair. She weaves the lives of Patrick, Michael, Claudius, Katelina, Jorick and the other players together in such a way that you can’t help but get pulled into the vortex with them.
Even though I wouldn’t characterize “urban fantasy vampire horror” as my favorite genre, I found myself unable to tear myself away from the utter train wreck of Patrick’s life. I was torn between wanting to off him myself for his stupidity and desperately wishing he would pull himself out of the mess he and Michael created. You, too, may want to throw things at Katelina’s head for getting and staying involved with Patrick.
If you like vampires the way they are supposed to be — dangerous, unpredictable and dark — you won’t regret picking this one up. And if you haven’t started Amaranthine yet — start here! One word of warning, unless you are better at stopping a perfectly beautiful train wreck than I am, give yourself plenty of time to read this before you should be sleeping. Either that, or have some really strong coffee ready for the next morning!
