Good story with ethically iffy elements
I've come to love Eileen Dreyer's romances. Perchance to Dream shares her flowing style, her easy POV transitions from character to character, her clear imagery and the marvelous way she integrates her character's internal monologues with the external scene and the unfolding drama. All of that is present in this book, but I am unable to give more than three stars for my review. The issue is the character of Lindsay. She's a professional psychologist, working for the police task force that is battling a murderous drug ring. When their top cop is forced to witness his partner's murder, he nearly loses it to PTSD. Lindsay is the one to step in and save him - it's her job, her life's work, and she's good at it. My problem stems from the fact that despite her professional excellence and her personal dedication, Lindsay elects to have repeated sex with her damaged colleague/patient. I simply can't ignore, excuse, or condone such a horrific violation of professional ethics, no matter how many excuses or how much rationalization the author gives her "heroine." Psychologists, like doctors, teachers, or clergy, act as authority figures/expert advisors/leaders to those they serve. It is inherently a relationship of power inequality, Sex under such circumstances is a betrayal of trust, and an abuse. Not liking this one, despite the good writing. Suspenseful & Emotional Romance
I love Ms Dryer's romance novels. She always delivers captivating and intriguing storylines. I find myself so immersed in the characters and stories that I lose all track of time until I read the last page. This one has it all, murder, suspense, betrayal, and of course romance. Highly recommend this book.
