A new standalone romantic suspense from a NYT Bestseller. Intended for mature readers.
I thought one hot night with Max Hallowell was harmless. I never expected it would force me to face my past or bring back the man who swore he’d never let me go. Now Max wants to help me. Wants to save me. But if I let him, he’ll be destroyed.
A woman with a secret past. A man determined to protect her. A dangerous passion that could cost them both everything.
Playing with Fire
Playing with fire is the first book in Lexi Ryan's series Mended Hearts. It definitely starts out blazing. It is a stand alone book, but she has characters from her New Hope series, and it's written where you do it need to read the other books, but why wouldn't you?! They are all incredible as well as Playing With Fire. I recommend you read them as well. This is Max's and Doc Phoenix's story. Nix has a lot of hidden secrets keeping her from having any kind of relationship. But Max is making it hard for her to keep that from happening. I like how the characters comes and go from the New Hope series. I still love William! The all play a role in the book, and we are introduced more with Cade, who it appears his story is next. Nix's past has come back to haunt her. Demons she thought were gone, are once again keeping her closed off to the one man that loves her. I admit it was a very thrilling and romantic book that keeps you engaged during the whole story. I enjoy very much a book that has twists and turns and keeps you guessing. The love story of Max and Nix is very real, and had me rooting for Max the whole story through. A very lovable, hot and sexy thrilling ride. Already can't wait until the next story in is series. Thank you Lexi!
Loving Max and Nix
There are spoilers if you have not read the prior New Hope stories especially the Here and Now series....
Max and Nix... This was such an amazing and emotional story. Max has had much heartache as we have seen after Hannah chose Nate, but he is an amazing father as he raises his daughter. Nix moved to New Hope to escape her past and she guards those secrets, especially after she has lost one love after telling him the truth. Max and Nix have a solid chemistry that Nix is not willing to give in to as she can't go through that again. However, Nix's past seems to be catching up to her as things start popping up and she finds safety in Max.
Will these two be able to truly escape Nix's past and let the chemistry they have ignite? Will her past take her away from Max and New Hope altogether? This is an amazing suspenseful love story that keeps you guessing until the end. I love all that Lexi has poured into all the New Hope stories!
The Phoenix always rises - 5+++ stars
Lexi has done it again. This is the first book of a new series, but with some of the characters that we already know. We caught a little glimpse of Nix and Max together in Sam and Lexi's book, so I was really excited to see where this went. Even though we 'knew' Nix from previous books, there was a lot about her that we didn't know. Everyone has their own hang-ups and pasts that they want to forget, but sometimes it seems like we are doomed to re-live those times we would rather forget ever happened.
After everything that happened with Hanna, Max is finally ready to move on with his life and 'date' again. One night of passion with the hot Doc was enough for him to realize that he wanted more with her, but unfortunately, Nix is running scared. She avoids relationships because she has been badly hurt in the past, which she never talks about with anyone in New Hope.
Does Max just have a savior complex or do his feelings for Nix go deeper? Can Nix let go of her past and move on with one of the good guys? There are a lot of twists and turns in this book that kept me on the edge of my seat for the majority of the book, but that's what makes Lexi's writing so AMAZING. She draws you in and doesn't let go of you until you read that last page. I would definitely recommend this new series to anyone that has ever read any of her New Hope books. You will NOT be disappointed!
