From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Hopeless and Losing Hope.
Sometimes two people have to fall apart to realize just how much they belong together.
Colleen Hoover entranced readers everywhere with her bestselling novel Slammed, the book that introduced Layken and Will, a young couple whose love overcame devastating hardships to emerge stronger and more resilient than before. Now, as Layken and Will’s emotion-packed story continues, a stunning and unforeseen revelation about Will’s past leaves them questioning everything that they thought they knew about each other. With the foundation of their relationship at risk, they must decide whether they are willing to fight for a future together, or to retreat back into solitude and heartache.
How far does Will have to go to prove to Layken his love for her will last forever? It will require something truly extraordinary to keep this couple together, and the decisions they make and the answers they find will change not only their lives, but the lives of everyone around them.
“Colleen Hoover's second novel is just as brilliant and entertaining as Slammed. Point of Retreat is absolute poetry.” —Jamie McGuire, author of Beautiful Disaster
I should have quit while I was ahead
Although I read and enjoyed SLAMMED (I did have to really do a lot of suspending of belief to do that), I was unable to suspend my belief for this story.
Major spoilers ahead
- Read at your own risk
There are just too many things I could not buy. One is that Lake's dying mother would make Will promise not to have sex with her ADULT daughter until a full year after her death. No one does that. Second, that Will would actually make and keep that promise. Third is that every time they're together and making out, although Lake is willing, Will refuses to have sex with her, even after the year time period has lapsed.
They then plan this entire weekend together where they'll finally "do the deed" and of course 15 minutes before they leave, the ex-girlfriend shows up at his house and refuses to leave. Of course Lake arrives just as Will is comforting his ex (kiss on the forehead) and storms out. Weekend is shot to hell and Lake refuses to talk to Will.
This not talking goes on for a bit. When it finally looks like they're FINALLY going to get together, tragedy strikes. At this point, I'm so frustrated with the book I'm skimming like crazy and wondering what on earth the author was thinking when she wrote it.
In the end, I was so disappointed, I wished I had just stuck with SLAMMED and hadn't read a word of this book because it ended up tainting SLAMMED for me. I learned my lesson and I will definitely not pick up another book about these two characters if one should come out. I should have quit while I was ahead.
Slammed/Point of Retreat
Finished both books in one weekend. A wonderful life story. Don't listen to the spoiler, they obviously have never found a real true love. Thanks Colleen for the tears of heart break and the tears of love.
I thought the story to be an inspiration to all. It makes you think in terms of your own life. Ask questions, push your boundaries! I love stories that make me feel and I hope you will too!
