Book 18, Scarpetta - Scarpetta (Book 18)

This book can be downloaded and read in Apple Books on your Mac or iOS device.

The world's bestselling crime writer Patricia Cornwell presents an extraordinary novel in which Kay Scarpetta is confronted with a case that could ruin her professionally-and personally.

From Publishers Weekly

Dec 20, 2010 – Bestseller Cornwell's compelling 18th Kay Scarpetta novel (after The Scarpetta Factor), her strongest work in years, involves the chief medical examiner in a case that's both far-reaching in its national security implications and deeply personal. The story begins at the real Port Mortuary at Dover Air Force Base, where Scarpetta is assisting in developing techniques for virtual autopsies, then shifts back to her recently adopted home at Boston's Cambridge Forensic Center (CFC). A young man's mysterious death becomes even stranger after full-body scans reveal destruction so extensive it's as if a bomb went off inside his body. Scarpetta and husband Benton Wesley along with her niece, Lucy Farinelli, and ex-cop turned CFC investigator Pete Marino discover links not only to a government project with the ability to cause mass casualties but also to another grisly case currently under investigation. As Scarpetta's military past rears its head, the emotional damage the investigation of the cases is bound to wreak on Cornwell's steadfast heroine will leave readers eager for the next installment. Long-time fans will welcome the return after a decade to a first-person narration with direct access to Scarpetta's thoughts.

Port Mortuary

Not the same level as the other Scarpeta novels. Wordier than necessary, lacks the element of mystery. To dark and moody, a real Scarpeta fan don't waste your time!

Plodding and difficult

I remember a time that I pre-ordered all of the Scarpetta books. Now I find them difficult to read. Kay feels sorry for herself and betrayed by everyone. The prose is disjointed and hard to follow. Wait for this one to get to the library because it isn't worth the money.

I am a huge fan of Patricia Cromwell and her Dr. Scarpetta series - but this book was quite a disappointment. It took a long time to define a plot. It had an array of characters that I didn't connect with - and not so subtle references to a ominous secret that wasn't all that ominous. I almost felt like it was setting up a cast of characters for a future chapter (book) in Dr. Scarpetta's life.
