He counts her smiles every day and night at the train station. And morning and evening, the beautiful commuter acknowledges him-just like she does everyone else on the platform. But Blake Hartt is not like the others . . . he's homeless. Memories of a broken childhood have robbed him of peace and twisted delusions into his soul. He stays secluded from the sun, sure the world would run from him in the harsh light of day. Each day, Livia McHugh smiles politely and acknowledges her fellow commuters as she waits for the train to the city. She dismisses this kindness as nothing special, just like her. She's the same as a million other girls-certainly no one to be cherished. But special or not, she smiles every day, never imagining that someone would rely on the simple gesture as if it were air to breathe. When the moment comes that Livia must do more than smile, without hesitation she steps into the fray to defend the homeless man. And she's surprised to discover an inexplicable connection with her new friend. After danger subsides, their smiles become conversation. Their words usher in a friendship, which awakens something in each of them. But it's not long before their bond must prove its strength. Entanglements from the past challenge both their love and their lives. Blake's heart beats for Livia's, even if her hands have to keep its rhythm. Love is patient. Love is kind. Love never fails. Love never fails, right? In an interwoven tale of unlikely loves and relationships forged by fire, Debra Anastasia takes readers into the darkest corners of human existence, only to show them the radiant power of pure adoration and true sacrifice. Complicated families and confused souls find their way to light in this novel, which manages to be racy, profane, funny, and reverent all at once.

Customer Reviews

An unconventional love story between many flavorful characters in a nontraditional lifestyle.

An unlikely friendship bonds Blake and Livie together and ignites a unique desire in each. The symbolism is what connects them. They both have lived a life of imprisonment and both have been told they are unlovable.
They have something special in each other. People don't see him but they see her. He does not want pity but she wants to show her concern for him without it being treated as pity.
It's a beautiful story. It's a touching story. It's charismatic. It's complex with many fine details. It's intricately crafted. Blake's story is tragic but the unveiling is rewarding.
I embrace the unconventional ways the story unfolds the mystery of each character. Each character has a uniqueness in them that brings a special flavor to the story.

Everything about this story is unconventional. The people who Livie meets and interacts with. It's like she discovered Alice's rabbit hole. These people have opened up a whole new realm of life and possibilities. The story reaches the grey areas in life and finds comfort in the not so normal. I appreciate people who understand that life isn't full of black and white scenarios. I'm a believer in the grey areas of life and this story provides that.
The brothers protect each other and find peace with one another. They share a bond.
Beckett is the protector of his brothers and there women.

I love the way Beckett and Kyle talk. I find there verbiage hilarious and highly inappropriate. There dialogue of profanity and naughty terminology is entertaining.

Debra is amazing in her ability to craft unlikely characters to meet. In all instances each couple has a heavy burden they carry and yet a wonderful gift. Each woman that these men encounter seems to only notice the gift in them and are forgiving of the burden. They are redeemed by forgiving women and their souls are set free of the guilt.
The journey this story takes you on is gangster style. With Beckett's lifestyle and Chris's crazy personality it makes for a very interesting adventure. The story has many facets. Livie and Blake are only part of the story. Beckett and Eve have a story. Cole and Kyle have a story. Even John and Kathy have a story. Many characters share in this story and all are interesting.
