Pretty Baby

A Gripping Novel of Psychological Suspense

This book can be downloaded and read in Apple Books on your Mac or iOS device.

"Thrilling and illuminating."—LA Times

"A hypnotic psychological thriller." —People

A chance encounter sparks an unrelenting web of lies in this new gripping and complex psychological thriller from the New York Times bestselling author of The Good Girl and the upcoming page-turner Don't You Cry, Mary Kubica

She sees the teenage girl on the train platform, standing in the pouring rain, clutching an infant in her arms. She boards a train and is whisked away. But she can't get the girl out of her head…

Heidi Wood has always been a charitable woman: she works for a nonprofit, takes in stray cats. Still, her husband and daughter are horrified when Heidi returns home one day with a young woman named Willow and her four-month-old baby in tow. Disheveled and apparently homeless, this girl could be a criminal—or worse. But despite her family's objections, Heidi invites Willow and the baby to take refuge in their home.

Heidi spends the next few days helping Willow get back on her feet, but as clues into Willow's past begin to surface, Heidi is forced to decide how far she's willing to go to help a stranger. What starts as an act of kindness quickly spirals into a story far more twisted than anyone could have anticipated.

From Publishers Weekly

Jun 15, 2015 – Kubica follows her acclaimed debut, 2014's The Good Girl, with a superb psychological thriller. Heidi Wood's husband, Chris, and 12-year-old daughter, Zoe, are used to her rants about recycling, poverty, and literacy, as well as her endless, depressing stories about the immigrants and refugees she meets through the Chicago nonprofit for which she works. But her family didn't expect Heidi to invite homeless teen Willow Greer and her infant, Ruby, to live with them. Heidi, whose dreams of a large family ended when she had a hysterectomy to save her life, becomes obsessed with Willow and especially Ruby, even as her marriage frays and she ignores Zoe. Afraid that Willow could be violent, Chris tries to find out her background and whether Ruby is even her baby. A series of flashbacks shift among the points of view of Heidi, Chris, and Willow as this heartbreaking tale about obsession, foster care, and the debilitating effects of unacknowledged grief builds to a stunning conclusion. 10-city author tour.

Good book

Wonderful narrator; well-written and thoroughly engaging. I could not put it down.

Character driven story...unforeseen lies...spiraling

In Pretty Baby, we meet a variety of characters who cross paths into each other’s lives exposing lies. With a theme centered around mental stability. Many variables come into play when each character’s actions create a set of circumstances leading them down a dangerous path of destruction. The story had elements of abuse, loss, hope, fear, courage, desperation, and awareness.

The story was character driven with multiple points of view. Each character crossed over into the others lives involving the other in a new set of circumstances.

This was a psychological suspense where some of the characters were exposed to danger on a mental level rather than a physical one. This was a slow building story. It took awhile to build to the psychological suspense. The entire story was building to this moment that revealed truths that devastated some of them emotionally. The deeper you get into the story more layers unfold exposing unforeseen lies.

Heidi is a charitable woman who works for a nonprofit agency helping refugees get settled. Heidi’s character appeared put together by others while inside she was crumbling.

Chris is an investment banker who works long hours and travels. He’s a good father and husband even after fourteen years of marriage.

Willow is homeless with a baby. Willow’s character has an emotional story that unfolds layer by layer. In the beginning, it’s hard to get a read on her. Slowly she unravels the truths of her life that make you compassionate for her situation.

I still have to rate this one with 3 stars because there were too many moments when I wanted to stop reading out of boredom. I trudged thru by skimming. Once I reached the end I realized how everything happens for a reason, but the damage was done and I couldn’t undo the execution of this story even with the closure I received upon the ending.

Just ok *yawn*

I love a book that is full of twists and turns, this suspense book didn't really meet that description. I did like how there were multiple first person views. I think the story could have been much shorter and still gotten to the same point. One thing I do not like at all is when books end open ended, I don't like to be left guessing unless it's a series. I wouldn't recommend this book.
