Queen of His Heart

Book 3, Queen Quartette

This book can be downloaded and read in iBooks on your Mac or iOS device.

Looks can be deceiving...
Carlos Moreno is captivated by his boss’ new assistant. Beyond Judith Bell’s beauty is a sweet, gentle woman needing desperately to be loved. After an abusive relationship leaves her guarded and withdrawn, Judith finds comfort in her quiet, predictable life. But ignoring the sexy, dark-eyed security chief—and her attraction to him—is proving impossible.
When an internal investigation into the attempted theft of company files points to Judith, Carlos begins to wonder if she’s as innocent as she appears. On the run from her mistakes and forced into hiding, Judith must decide to trust Carlos or face her monsters alone.

Left wondering if he’s been duped by a pretty face, Carlos is torn between two choices: fulfilling his duties as chief of security or protecting the woman who’s already stolen his heart.

4 out of 5 stars

After reading another story by this author, I thought the writing was promising enough to just keep going, so that I did. Queen of Hearts is the 3rd book in Hart’s Queen Quartette series and is based around a Vegas casino, Royal Courts. I’ve not read any of the prior stories in the series but I wanted to jump right in and get a feel for the series, plus this is an IR and well…I’m a sucker (there’s one of us born every minute).

Judith Bell has a secret, it’s a pretty big secret. Part of her cover of the secret is working at Royal Courts. She’s the executive assistant to one of the higher ups, one of the partners actually. Carlos Moreno’s is in control of the security for the business. He’s a relatively new hire of just a few months but as soon as he saw Judith he knew she’s a prize worth having. Yep, I was digging the premise too.

Carlos spends a lot of time chasing Judith. A lot of the chasing also includes some outrageously outdated and snort worthy one-liners. You know the ‘you must be tired, because you’ve been running through my mind’ type of crap we’ve all heard. But when the deliverer is cute so are the lines so go figure. I’m not sure why but I really like the way that Hart writes her heroes. They actually seem to give a crap about the heroine before the feelings are reciprocated.

Carlos definitely liked Judith, a lot, because what he put up with for her is more than even I can give him credit for. At one point I really wanted him to put his foot down with her and even give her an ultimatum. Honesty and trust go a long way and I didn’t trust Judith with Carlos’s feelings.

I know that Judith has a past and a secret that she was very protective of but betraying her employer, and in turn Carlos, the way she did. WOW! That’s bold to do that and still want and expect help. Maybe I gave her too much credit as being wiser than she actually was but she just seem to have fallen for the blackmail piece really quickly. I’m not sure what she was thinking when she agreed to the sabotage to the company that hired her…I mean I know what I read but it just seemed to ‘easy’ and really kind of a dumb thing to do.

In retrospect, this is actually a pretty quick read. The pace of Judith and Carlos’s relationship went smoothly and was relatively even. Her past was told a bit repetitively but it kept the story moving.

Then there were the few scenes between Carlos and his cousin, those were fun and the love and affection between those two really came off well. I wouldn’t mind seeing that cousin get his own story (if he hasn’t already).

I didn’t think the bad guy was all that great. Both he and his actions laid themselves out before he ever showed up and for that - I was disappointed. In the end, this is a sweet little romance with a little bit of not suspenseful suspense, and a much more likable hero than heroine.

Happy Reading Folks!
